Bd Conflicting With Office Programs

Greetings,

Last week I purchased two copies of BitDefender AntiVirus Ver10 for two XP Pro computers with expired NAV subscriptions. (I've wanted to start migrating away from NAV for sometime and had been told good things about BD.) I purchased both copies online.

The very first thing that happened when installing was I was told there was a newer version available - did I want to download it? This I found to be very odd - why do they not offer the most recent version to start with? Anyway, not a big deal, but it did make me stop and think 'Hmm, what am I getting myself into here?'

Well, this week I got my answer.

1. The first user immediately came to me first thing Monday morning and told me that neither Word nor Excel would stay open (both open for a few seconds, display the "I'm gonna crash - do you want me to send a message to Bill Gates" popup, then close and reopen. Over and over and over... Of course, with Word as his e-mail editor, Outlook wouldn't work either (this tends to really irritate people). I tried to repair the BD installation (no help), and ended up removing it after which the Office programs worked properly.

2. A little while later, user #2 came to let me know that Excel couldn't print to the colour laser printer. Once again, Excel offers to send a nice little note to the Microsoft Gang, then crashes. This occurs when the specific printer was selected from the Print window (it's not the default printer) and before the Print button was clicked. Again, removal of BD took away the problem.

I usually have some luck fixing these things with the help of Google, but this time found almost no references to problems between BD and MS Office. Anyone at this forum have any helpful ideas (besides switching to AVG)?

thanks in advance,

Firebird.

Well, I can state with certainty that BD has no obvious adverse effects on MSOffice 2003 on XP or Vista on my machines.

However, symantec products sure did. I, too, switched from Symantec and found that once Symantec's software has its tentacles wrapped around your system, getting them out is likely going to have side effects. On XP I had to re-install the OS clean to stop the various issues.

  • I used jvPowertools to remove every reference to Symantec and Norton from the registry, so I thought that might be enough. Actually, I was surprised at how few references there were (~10) compared with older versions which would leave up to a couple hundred.

However, the fact that I found so little with Google on BD conflicting with Office suggests to me that you could be correct. I will try an XP repair, and then try installing BD again.

    Hi firebird,

I'm not sure about this, but Symantec should have an Uninstall Tool for it's AV. Try to find it on their site and use it. That tool should completely remove NAV from your PC.

    Cris.

Edit: As far as I've seen on their site, it appears they have multiple uninstall tools. You have to find the one that's write for what you had. Try to look at this one: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.n...002061016251406

  • I've used their uninstall tools before, but they still usually leave a few folders, files, and/or registry entries behind. Anyway, I don't think it's actually a Norton leftover causing the problem; just maybe some Office files that the now thankfully-departed Norton corrupted.

Interesting, I have just installed Bitdefender on our two pcs a home. One was on a machine that had just been reformatted and had xp home reinstalled and it seems to work fine. The other machine, which has always been the most stable, certainly has not liked Bitdefender and I could not use Word as my editor in Outlook. I have just uninstalled Bitdefender and now I can use Word as my text editor in Outlook and that is why I'm here!

I am using Office 2003. I tried the detect and repair, but it didn't make any difference. I did get a message about the Outlook plug-in being diabled once. Also when I tried to initiate a scan, the scan window would not open. I could see the number of files being scanned in the advance settings window; and leaving the machine overnight, it only managed to scan about 4500 files, whereas on my son's pc it seems to be working fine. I obviously have a program that is causing a conflict, but which one? Before installation of BitDefender I removed all previous AVS and malware programs using their uninstall programs and I then ran RegMechanic, so I think I did everything I could to remove previous programs likely to cause a conflict.
