Left4dead Crashes When Firewall Is Enabled

i'm using internet security 2009
in order to get into the game and join a sevrer i have to disable the firewall, generally just for 5-15 minutes, long enough to start the game and get in a server, if i try launching it with the firewall enabled it crashes to desktop right after launching.
i have another unrelated issue with the scan activity bar starting with the computer even though it's box isn't checked and i've selected to hide it, after every reboot it comes back.
