  • Please tell us which protocol does your e-mail account use in order to receive e-mails?

Also, since you have Vista, please make sure that User Account Control is disabled in the Control Panel and check in order to see if you still encounter this issue after disabling it(if it was enabled).

    Hi

I use both IMAP (gmail) and POP3 (hotmail).

I don't want to disable User Account Control, because it is a feature of Windows used for protecting the computer from malware.

In fact, the section does not update, with User Account Control disabled.

  • Hi

the tip to turn User Account Control off by Diana Bele was crap. How would that make BD to update itself on anti-spam statistics? LOL

Please take staff or make "only" those to tip on this forum, who have very good experience of BD.

  • Hi

the file activity and network activity graphs still don't show! This problem was reported in March 2009! This looks like a very simple problem to solve! Are BD staff too lazy? <img class=" />

  • First of all, a troubleshooting process for an unknown issue is based on a trial and error process this is why while we were asking for the ports that you e-mail accounts use we tried to cover other possible factors that may lead to this situation - this is why we asked you to disable UAC.

However, the cause of this issue relies in another factor:

BitDefender has a series of proxy filters that will scan certain ports for e-mail in order to offer Antispam features in the product. At the moment we only offer filtering for ports 25 and 110.

From what I could see Gmail and Hotmail accounts use either SSL/TLS enabled POP3 for incoming e-mail which will be on port 995, thus it will not be scanned by BitDefender, or the IMAP 143 port which is also not covered by these proxies.

The statistics in the product are thus correct.

  • Hi

you concluded that BD does not offer antispam for gmail and hotmail which is ridiculous. Why can't you just add those ports?

  • Hi Diana,

I also have another email provider called rediffmail (pop3 port - 110; and smtp port - 25). I already have this configured in BD! But still the anti-spam status is not updated!

For GMail, you use IMAP. The IMAP protocol makes it impossible for realtime antimalware/antispam/whatever filtering, because the message headers are downloaded automatically, and message bodies are downloaded on-demand, later (at user's choice). Because of this, filtering cannot be made based on the headers alone (they don't contain enough relevant data for such filtering).

For Hotmail, where you use the 443 port, it means that you use the secured protocol, which uses encrypted traffic. Therefore, traffic cannot be monitored and filtered (this is the exact purpose of traffic encryption).

If BtDefender Antispam could be able to monitor encrypted traffic, then it means that the encryption can be bypassed. And if the encryption can be bypassed, then it's useless. Thus you reach a contradiction (encryption is not useless, since it provides protection against data theft), therefore, going back on the statements, BitDefender Antispam cannot filter encrypted traffic. :)

  • Hi

rediffmail does not use secure connection (no SSL or TLS) for pop (port #110).

Bot still the anti-spam status is not updated.

I understand now why Outlook/Yahoo also was not monitored - it uses ports 465 and 995 and they are also encrypted

  • Hi Cris

Gmail: The filtering could be done when the email contents are available.

Hotmail: When the email arrives to the inbox, it would have been decrypted, and then the filtering could be done.
