Bd2010 Memory Usage

Hi BitDefender support,

My daily download traffic is cca 50-70GB. I download from servers like Rapidshare and Netload (no P2P networks). For downloading I use FDM (Free Download Manager) and JDownloader.

I used Windows Vista x64 and BDTS2009 before (with no problems). My problem started when I upgraded to Windows 7 B7600 x64 and BDTS2010.

The problem I'm experiencing is that after downloading cca 30-40GB amount of data, my memory is fully occupied (I have 4GB RAM). My system is completely unusable at this point. To be clear... dowloading cca 10GB costs me 1GB of my RAM.

To find out the cause of this problem (and to be sure that this is not a bug in Windows 7), I booted into safe mode and disabled "BitDefender Virus Shield" (VSSERV) service. Then booted back to normal mode and started downloading. After downloading 40GB of data, my memory usage was the same as when the windows started (cca 1.2GB). So the problem is gone with VSSERV disabled.

While downloading (with VSSERV enabled and disabled) my computer was idling, so no other process could have affected the memory usage.

Windows 7 B7600 x64

BiDefender Total Security 2010

RAM: 4GB

Thank you very much :-)

  • Hello Siggy,

For start please read the instructions that I have sent you through the email and reply back with the files that we need.

As a workaround, we recommend you to follow the next steps :

    1. Open BitDefender, click on the Settings button choose Expert Mode then click on Ok .

    2. Click on Antivirus, then click on the the Custom Level button under the Shield tab.

    3. Here check the option called "Don't scan files larger than" and type in a value then click on Ok.

Basically if download large files, BitDefender will try to scan them and most probably that is why you have this high cpu usage with the main BitDefender process, vsserv. That is why,you can skip them from scanning in real time by following the steps above.

Let us know how it worked .

    Thank you .

  • Furher more, we need to know if you customized the Real Time Protection, and what are your current settings (BEFORE applying the settings suggested by Alex).

To do that, send me an e-mail with the vshield.xml file found in your bitdefender installation folder.

  • Hi, I'd like to send you the xml file, but I don't know your email address. I can send you an email through your profile, but I can't add an attachment in there :) Anyway, the only change I did was the one that Alex suggested me, but that didn't work either. So I reverted the changes back. The protection level is set to "Default".

But I'm not sure if Alex understood me correctly...

I'm not mentioning CPU usage anywhere. I don't have problem with that. My problem is the memory usage. When I start downloading files from the internet, my RAM usage is cca 1.2-1.4GB (depends). After 10-20GB downloaded, my RAM usage is cca 2.0-3.0GB. This does not happen when VSSERV is disabled. From my point of view it looks like BitDefender is caching something incorrectly or what...

I'll follow the instructions that Alex has send me in the email and let you know.

  • I've sent the files requested by Alex to him. Hope that's gonna help :)

  • Hi BitDefender support,

I'd like to ask what's the status of solving this issue. I'm still experiencing the problem described above. Until now I've just received three e-mails from Alex, where he's been instructing me what to do. All I had to do was running your tools and then sent the log files back to Alex (personally I think that was useless, but whatever...). Were you unable to reproduce the issue by yourseleves, or... ? Anyway, I'll describe the issue once again, in pictures this time.

    Testing methodics:

    - No necessary processes were running while I was testing.

    - In every test I was downloading same files, from same internet links, to same place on my HDD.

    - I deleted downloded files after each test.

    - I used Free Download Manager to download the files.

    - File names are removed from screenshot (they are not necessary).

    Testing:

    01. I booted up the system.

    02. After 2 minutes I took the following picture:

    post-26502-1253004094_thumb.jpg

    - As you can see, the system now occupies 1.08GB of my memory. No data were downloaded so far.

    03. I waited another 10 minutes and after that I took the following picture (just to be sure that no other processes with delayed start or what will start occupying the memory):

    post-26502-1253004102_thumb.jpg

    - As you can see, the systeem now occupies 1.06GB of my memory. No data were downloaded so far.

    04. I started downloading the files from Internet.

    05. After another 10 minutes I took the following screenshot:

    post-26502-1253004108_thumb.jpg

    - As you can see, system now occupies 2.01GB of my memory. Until now I downloaded cca 4GB from the Internet.

    06. I waited another 10 minutes and then I took following screenshot:

    post-26502-1253004116_thumb.jpg

    - As you can see, system now occupies 2.66GB of my memory. Until now I downloaded cca 7GB from the Internet.

    07. I decided to stop the download, delete downloaded files, boot into safe mode and disable VSSERV service:

    post-26502-1253003674_thumb.jpg

    08. I booted back into normal mode and after 2 minutes I took the following screenshot:

    post-26502-1253003909_thumb.jpg

    - As you can see, the systeem now occupies 907MB of my memory. No data were downloaded so far.

    09. I started downloading immediately and after next 10 minutes I took the following screenshot:

    post-26502-1253004088_thumb.jpg

    - As you can see, system now occupies 0.97GB of my memory. Until now I downloaded cca 4GB from the Internet.

    10. I deleted downloaded files and restarted the system.

    11. I disabled BitDefender's real-time protection.

    12. After 2 minues I took the following screenshot:

    post-26502-1253004123_thumb.jpg

    - As you can see, the systeem now occupies 1.07GB of my memory. No data were downloaded so far.

    13. I started downloading immediately and after next 10 minutes I took the following screenshot:

    post-26502-1253004128_thumb.jpg

    - As you can see, the systeem now occupies 1.64GB of my memory. Until now I downloaded cca 3.5GB from the Internet.

    14. I waited another 2 minutes and took the last screenshot:

    post-26502-1253004138_thumb.jpg

    - As you can see, the systeem now occupies 1.80GB of my memory. Until now I downloaded cca 4GB from the Internet.

    Fast conclusion:

    - From steps 01-03 it's clear, that system occupies cca 1.0GB of my memory and this number does not grow up in time.

    - From steps 04-06 it's clear, that when I'm downloading files from the Internet my memory occupation grows up (after these steps I still can't say if it is caused by BitDefender or not).

    - From steps 07-09 it's clear, that BitDefender is responsible for the problem.

    - From steps 10-14 it's clear, that disabling BitDefender's real-time protection is useless.

This behavior is unacceptable for me. If this issue is not solved until my licence ends up (and that is quite soon), I'm definetely not going to renew it. Please don't take this as threat, it's just a fact... I can't live with this.

  • Hello BitDefender support,

What's the state of solving this issue ?
