if you use bitdefender chat encryption and the person your talking to doesnt. then is your messages still encrypted on your computer and on theirs but there messages aren't?

No, encryption is only active when both users have BitDefender installed, IM encryption is enabled and both users use YahooMessenger or Windows Live Messenger. Otherwise, encryption is disabled.
