quick question about operation

Im trying out bitdefender antivirus plus v 10 deciding if to buy it or not, its pretty good found few virus's and blocked one from getting in , the only problem is how much it crunches my performance, my machine is getting abit old i guess p4 2.66 1 gig of ram xp sp2 , so while i am close to going ahead and buying it , My question, is there a way to turn it off completly with out having to go through the tray menu and disabling each module one at a time ?, the other thing that would be nice is to have it turned on only when im online if Im just doing photoshop or whatever without internet connected there really isnt any reason for it to be chugging along in the background claiming a huge part of my cpus output. Any ideas on performance eg turning it off would be a great help .Yes I RTFM but could not see anywhere mentioning a global type disabling.

Thanks for any help

  • Hi

You can try this to reduce the cpu usage. Open BitDefender go to antivirus, shield, adjusted level then you can enable the option don't scan files largen then 5000 kb is filled in by default but you change it. The second thing you can use is the option exclude this path for scanning on all levels (all accounts) press on add item and browse to the folder you want to exclude but be sure that the folder isn't infected.

  • [...]exclude this path for scanning on all levels (all accounts)[...]

    Hi Niels,

I see that everytime you say "all levels", you say "all accounts". That is not correct. All options are applied to all Windows Accounts, not only the Exclude path from scan.

As I said before, all levels means that those paths will not be modified if you move the Protection Level slider to another value. The rest of the settings for the AV Shield change according to the level of protection you choose (except for the excluded paths, which remain whatever level you choose).

  • All level of protection should be fine ;) and if Cris is right, all Windows Accounts( i do not tested that, i tested only level of protection in BD).

  • Hi Cris

I will test it on the other pc that has multiply windows accounts. To see if the functions are applied on all levels but I think you are right.

  • I have multiple Windows accounts on my PC and they all have the same BitDefender settings. :)

What I dislike is that you can't change many settings when the account has limited rights. That I already discovered. But I know it now. Thanks for posting it.

Thank you very much for your tips I am in the process of making these changes and seeing how it effects things as that is probably my only gripe with this software , It is so clearly noticable at default levels the computer and internet connection take a very big hit, for example when i go to check emails the screens dont redraw for a few seconds, there are big delays on menu clicks and just general computer navigation as soon as I disable bitdefender the computer goes back to performing well.I always knew tsr type programs effect performance , but at its present state it really isnt a usable solution . The positive about the software is it really does its intended job of protecting the system Im amazed at the frequency of the exploits out there I really didnt realise the scope of them till i installed bitdefender > I will muck about with your suggested settings and see if I cant get a happy medium between performance and security. If I do I will surely buy a licence ,thanks for you time ,

  • I also use BitDefender Antivirus plus v10. My internet speed doesn't slow down and all my folders and right clicking works without any slowdonws. Look also if the option scan http traffic is disabled. Open BitDefender go to antivirus, shield, adjusted level and see if the option scan http traffic is disabled. Do you have any other security programs installed ? Have you installed your previous antivirus? How many running processes are running in task manager ? (control+alt+del(ete)) I also suggest that you take a look at your startupitems : go to start, run,at the run dialog box type msconfig press enter go to the latest tab (startup) and enter the name that you will find under item for startup on this website : http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html If you see a N or X you may uncheck the item on the end press on apply and ok. I also suggest that you clear your computer from junk by using ccleaner : http://www.filehippo.com/download/53921335...97394/download/

Don't forget to uncheck yahoo toolbar during installation. Then use the clean up function.
