Generic Doubts About Bitdefender

People, I'd just like to know if BitDefender also scans outgoing mail and if it is capable of scanning IMAP mails and the NNTP protocol. And if it is capable of scanning within any mail client. Also, where can I send heristically detected and undetected files?

Thanks,

Scirious.

L.E.: Also, can BitDefender operate in a silent mode withou any popups but not in game mode?

  • Hi Scirious,

    I merged your two posts.

People, I'd just like to know if BitDefender also scans outgoing mail

BitDefender scans all incoming e-mails only if they come through the standard POP3 (110) port. Also, BD scans outgoing e-mails only if they are sent using the standard SMTP (25) port. In other words, if your e-mail server (where your e-mail client connects to download the e-mails) uses some non-standard ports, BitDefender will not scan any e-mails.

A good example of server that uses non-standard ports is GMail. It uses Secure Connection (ports 995 for incoming and 465 for outgoing).

and if it is capable of scanning IMAP mails and the NNTP protocol.

This I don't know. I'll try to find out. You can also try to contact Live Assistance (Technical Support) and they might be able to answer your question.

And if it is capable of scanning within any mail client.

Yes. The scanning procedure is client-independent, because BD scans the traffic (e-mails) made through ports POP3 and SMTP. It doesn't matter what client you use to send your mails.

Also, where can I send heristically detected and undetected files?

The fastest way to get response about suspected files and about files that are clean, but they are detected as infected (these are called False Positives) is to put them in a zip files protected by the password infected and attach them to a new thread, on thi forum, in the Malware section. Don't attach infected files somewhere else, because other users might download them and they might get infected.

Once you upload the files, a BD Virus Analyst will take a look at them and he will tell you what you need to know.

Well, there are some settings that you can make:

Antivirus: go to Antivirus section, click on Custom level and un-check Show warning when a virus is found. BD will take the necessary actions, but it will not inform you about it.

Firewall: The only silent mode here is Game Mode. But I really don't suggest using this option, because it will allow absolutely every traffic, so it's vey unsafe. Instead, you can choose the option Allow whitelisted which will automatically allow all applications that are in the BD Whitelist (without pop-ups). However, if an application that is not in the list requests access to the internet, BD will ask you about it.

Update: Just set it to Automatic and, in the settings, enable Silent update and you're done. BD will update itself whenever needed and you won't be asked anything. However, some updates need to reboot your system. When this happens, BD will ask you about it. If you want to disable this pop-up, you have to check the option Wait for reboot, instead of prompting.

If you use Privacy Control with Registry Control enabled, then you will be warned whenever an applications tries to add itself on the startup list. You cannot disable thee pop-ups, but BD will remember all prevoius answers, so it will not ask you twice about the same application (it will ask you only for new applications).

This is about everything I can think of right now. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to post :)
