Best Settings for "action to take with infected/suspect file"?

Just wondering what the best settings are for Bitdefender when it finds an infected and suspect file during scans. I've noticed I have to remove the real-time monitoring in order to delete any intrusions in the past.

  • For the On Demand scan, I recommend to set all actions (for infected and suspected, both first and second actions) to Ask. This way, you'll have full control on what happens with the viruses and/or false positives in your computer, because BD will always ask you what to do when it finds a virus.

For the Realtime Protection scan, I recommend: First action = Disinfect, Second action = Deny access and continue (for both infected and suspected files).

When Realtime Protection finds an infected/suspected file, by default, it blocks the access to that file, so that it won't infect your computer. To delete that file (or to do something else with it, like move it to Quarantine), it's safer to open Explorer, find that file (which was blocked by BD), right click on it and select BitDefender v10. This will cause BitDefender to scan that file and you will be asked what to do with it. When that question pops-up, you can choose to Delete the infected file, without disabling the Realtime Protection (therefore, you'll be 100% safe all the time).

Hopefully, in BD v11 the user will have the possibility to choose an action when a virus is found by the Realtime Protection, but now you have to manually scan and delete the viruses blocked by Realtime Protection.

  • I recommend you use the settings below:

    infected file:

    1-st action disinfect

2-nd action move to quarantine (i do not use prompt for action because some malware create an executable file in many folders so you will be flooded with messages from BD asking what to do with the files in question)

    suspect:

1-st move to quarantine (i don't think disinfecting a suspect file will do any good)

    2-nd deny access

  • 2-nd action move to quarantine (i do not use prompt for action because some malware create an executable file in many folders so you will be flooded with messages from BD asking what to do with the files in question)

About the "you will be flooded with messages from BD asking what to do", I agree with you.

On the other side, I've had a lot of False Positives in my PC. Because of this, automatically moving the files to Quarantine could break some legit applications and that's why I do not recommend this set of options. I prefere to be asked whenever BD finds a virus then to have some clean files moved to quarantine. Furthermore, BitDefender does a very good job keeping the viruses out, so it's a very small chance I will be "flooded with messages from BD asking what to do".

Anyway, everyone is free to choose what options they want/like, especially the options that make them feel the safest.

    Cris.
