Bit Defender Is Slowing Down My Computer To Impossible Standards!

BitDefender is slowing down my computer to an impossible standard.

It's taking me an average of 10 to 15 minutes to complete start up - that is, be completely ready to work having started everything it needs to - when before it never took more than 1 minute, usually 30 seconds

Each program I start takes minutes to actually start to work, and it is closing down programs like Microsoft Photo Editor (!) because something called the Intrusion Detection System thinks they're harmful.

I cannot work like this.

I just bough the renewal of my Subscription, and it wasn't chea.p.

I work as a Designer, my computer is my work tool.

What do I do???

Please, I really need some help.

Thank you.

  • To better understand the possible source of your issue, you need to provide basic configuration information about your PC as described in paragraph #6 of the Forum Posting Rules pinned topic:

-What Windows OS (XP, Vista, 7)? Is it 32-bit or 64-bit? What Service Pack?

-Which BD product do you have installed (Antivirus Pro, Internet security or Total Security)?

-What type & speed processor (CPU) does the PC have?

-How much memory (RAM) is installed in the PC?

-What internet browser(s) and version(s) are you using?

-Do you have any other security programs, firewalls, or any other PC tools type programs installed?

-Have you recently uninstalled any other security type programs and if so what uninstall method did you use (the program's uninstall function, Windows Add/Remove Programs function, the supplier's specific Uninstall Tool)?

-Any other relevant hardware/software information not already asked?

Total Security 2011 as of yesterday

    Intel® Core 2Duo CPU

    E7400 @ 2.80GHz

    2.80GHz 3.00 GB RAM

-Do you have any other security programs, firewalls, or any other PC tools type programs installed?

    Nothing. I meant it.

-Have you recently uninstalled any other security type programs and if so what uninstall method did you use (the program's uninstall function, Windows Add/Remove Programs function, the supplier's specific Uninstall Tool)?

The only thing I uninstalled was the previous BitDefender I had, when I installed this one, and at this installer's request. It did it on his own, asked me to reboot and continued the installation of the current product

-Any other relevant hardware/software information not already asked?

I can't honestly say I know. I'm a Designer. You ask and I'll do my best to answer.

    Thank you.

  • I was carefully re-reading my answer when I noticed I had made a mistake (which I already edited, and I apologize for it: not E7400 @ 80GHz, but E7400 @ 2.80GHz)

    Also, at other relevant stuff:

I never use it, but I have installed IE 9.0 - not sure if it's relevant.

I also have installed, and use it once a month, Smart Defrag 2.0.1 though BD doesn't seem to have a problem with it.

I'm new to this, I'm sorry if I'm not as through as I would wish right at first.

    Thank you.

  • On a much more alarming note, both the programs with which I work the most, Corel Paint Shop Pro and Adobe Photoshop CS3 are stopped from even opening because they are deemed harmful by the infamous Intrusion Detection System.

    I CANNOT WORK.

This is not slow, this is an impossibility.

Please understand, thatif I don't get a solution fast, I'll have to ask for a reimbursement and try some other solution.

  • Thanks for your detailed response, it was a great help. :)

A defrag program should not be a problem, but hold off running it until we get BD straightened out. What we mainly look for is another security program with real-time protection loaded and running which may conflict with BDTS.

Since you had a previous version of BD installed and let the new version's installer remove the previous version, this is what I would recommend to start with a clean slate:

    1. Download and run the BD Uninstall Tool from HERE to insure that all traces of any previous BD program(s) have been removed.

    2. Allow enough time for the Uninstall Tool to run to normal completion then reboot the PC.

    3. Download a fresh copy of BD Total Security, 32-bit from HERE and run the downloaded file to install to program. At some point during the installation, the installer may alert you that it found a "newer" version of BDTS and ask you if you want to install it - reply "No" and let the installation of the downloaded file continue.

    4. Let the installer program run to normal completion and then reboot the PC.

    5. After the reboot, right-click on the red BD icon in the Windows System Tray and select "Update Now." This will update you to the latest version of the BD program files as well as the latest virus definition files.

    6. Let the Update run to normal completion and again reboot the PC.

At this point you should be ready to try your PC and see how it runs.

    Awaiting your reply,

  • Gary, I'm saving all these instructions to a Notepad and will run them exactly as you say.

I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have someone helping me. I'm very scared, this is my income at stake.

It will take some time, but as soon as it is done, I will get back here and let you know.

When I installed yesterday, BD told me I needed to "Tune Up", and that meant downloading a lot of updates for programs - Microsoft Programs, as it were.

Should I do it again, if it asks me to, or should I ignore it?

    Thank you again.

  • I always do my Microsoft updates directly with Microsoft. Do you know if you are up to date with all Critical MS updates? If you know that your MS updates are current, then reply "No" when BD asks.

It's personal preference, but I use BDAV and on the Vulnerability tab settings, I have Critical windows Updates, Regular Windows Updates & Application Updates deselected. My thought is that each of these programs check for their own updates, why add overhead to the PC and my internet traffic by having BD also check? But again, that's my personal preference. Many other users leave those options enabled.

  • Gary, you're a magician!

It worked like a charm, and for some reason, on this "version", that Intrusion Detection System was disabled, praise the Gods!

Is that something that I should have enabled? It was causing me a lot of distress, but I don't want to be vulnerable.

Otherwise, everything is working just as it should.

    I cannot thank you enough.

It's people like you that make life lighter and keep my faith in humanity alive *hugs*

  • Glad it worked for you. :)

By default, IDS is disabled if BD installs correctly. When you stated you were getting IDS alerts, it was a tip-off to me that BD had not installed correctly the first time.

Just so you know, by default, BD installs with these Antivirus settings:

    1. AVC enabled, slider set to "High" and "Alert me before taking an action" checked.

    2. IDS disabled.

    3. Exclusions empty.

Feel free to start a new topic if you have any new issues.

    Happy Easter!
