  • Feed and subscription Frequently Asked Questions

What are subscriptions and what are they good for?

Subscriptions are a way to notify you when a new message appears on the forum or in a given section of the forum. While you can subscribe to topics you create (by marking the "Enable email notification of replies?" checkbox you create), subscriptions offer a way to be instantly notified of messages posted in any of the topics in a give (sub-)category. The email notification is useful if you want to monitor a few topics (for example you posted a question about a malware and want to be notified as soon as somebody replies), while subscriptions are useful for a more wide-scale monitorization.

So what are RSS / Atom feeds and how do I use them?

Feeds are files which contain the newest posts on the forum in a well defined format. Atom and RSS are two such standard formats. To use them you need a feed reader (also referred to as RSS reader) application which will periodically check feeds you selected (the feeds you subscribed to) and alert you whenever something new is added to them. These feed reader applications come in two flawors:

    • Desktop applications - these are classic desktop applications which you can install on your computer. Some examples are RSSBandit (for Windows) or Straw (for Linux). Also some applications which are not feed readers can include feed reading capabilities. For example all the newest web-browsers (Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0, Mozilla Firefox 2.0 and Opera 9) and some email clients (Mozilla Thunderbird for example) have this capability.

    • Web applications - these applications are hosted by a third party (for example Yahoo! or Google) and you use them by visiting their web pages. They are similar to web-mail (like Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail or GMail). Their advantage is that they are instantly available anywhere an internet connection exists, because they require no installation. Some examples are: Google Reader, My Yahoo and Bloglines. The first two you can instantly use if you have a Google (GMail) account or a Yahoo! (Yahoo Mail or Yahoo Messenger) account.

Whichever method you choose, you need to know the address of the feed (this is similar to the address of a webpage - like http://www.example.com) to instruct your reader to watch it for you. You can find out this address by clicking on the orange icons near the feed names. This will take you to a page which tries to help you with the subscribing process.

If you have a desktop application, try to click on the "View Feed XML" link. Most desktop applications integrate with the web browsers and will automatically detect that you clicked on a feed address, pop-up and offer you the option to subscribe to it. In case this doesn't happen and you see a lot of weird text in your browser, it means that your RSS reader does not offer this feater (or for some reason it failed to work properly). In this case copy the address from the navigation bar (for example http://feeds.feedburner.com/Bitdefender-en...Talk?format=xml) and paste it in your application.

If you use a web-based reader and the logo of your reader is present on the page, just click it and it will automatically add the feed to your reader. Again, if this fails, click on the "View Feed XML" link and copy-paste the address in your reader manually.

What are e-mail subscriptions and how do I use them?

If for whatever reason you wish to be notified by e-mail when a new post is made to the forum, you can request this either by clicking on the links from the second list above or by clicking on the orange icons and the on the "Get ... delivered by email" link. If you subscribe this way, you will get an e-mail notification for each new post that is made to the forum. Warning! Because this forum is high-traffic one, most probably you don't want to do that because it can generate a large volume of e-mails.
