Can't Get Rid Of Viruses In Emptied Trash Folder

Help! I've just joined and I am an idiot with computers, so please give any advice in clear step by step.

I keep getting a pop-up window showing a virus in my trash folder. But I have emptied my trash and compacted the folders.

Running a deep scan showed two difficulties I can't figure out:

One, saying there is a virus (Generic.Peed.Eml.2F548E5C) on two messages in my trash folder...but there is nothing in my Thunderbird trash folders! The details say the the disinfection failed and move failed.

Two, saying there are two viruses (Generic.Peed.Eml.DC9CDEB5 and Generic.Peed.Eml.CA9F99C5) on three messages in my saved Outlook Express (which I no longer use but save the files for archive). My messages are not obviously numbered, so I counted to the message number i.e. message 571, but I know for sure that one is not infected, nor are the others around it. How do I find the real message 571? And if I find them, can I remove them?...the details also say disinfection failed and move failed as they did for Thunderbird.

Many, many thanks for any advice.

Reboot your pc into safe mode you can do this by rebooting your pc and by pressing several times on the F8 button before the windowsloading screen select safe mode and press enter. Log in with your account now click on start, right click on my computer choose properties, click on the system restore tab check the box disable system restore on all stations press on apply and confirm the windows message. Wait till everything is greyed out. Now uncheck the box once again and press on apply and ok. Go to start,my computer,go to the tools menu, folder options, view (display),uncheck hide operating system protected files and check show hidden files and folders. You will now see a folder called recycler open it and open the subfolder delete only the content of the folder.

Most likely they are now stored in the Thunderbird archive that happens automatically after some time.

For your other issue take a look at the instructions that I gave here.

    Best regards

  • Dear Niels,

Bless you for your quick reply.

I believe I followed your instructions. The only difference from your instructions was that everything never "greyed out." Also, when I tried to uncheck the box in systems restore, the message said I could not do it in safe mode and would have to return to normal mode to do so, which I did.

Following the rest of the instructions, under the hidden files etc, that box was already checked for showing hidden folders.

When I came to the end, there was no folder showing called recycler. The only folders showing were "Massey's documents" and "Shared documents." there were no recycle folders or application data folders in either of those.

Just to be sure, I double-checked and the BitDefender pop up about the virus still shows when I try to delete a new email. Also, I forgot to mention that the Thunderbird window pops up saying "The message could not be moved or copied to folder "trash" because writing to folder failed. To gain disk space, from the File menu, first close Empty Trash, and then chose Compact folders, and then try again." As I mentioned I have already done that, which is why the trash folder shows empty, though obviously it is not.

Did I do something incorrectly and/or do you have any other ideas?

    Cheers,

    Ann

  • If I understand correctly your problem is that you can't delete e-mails in Thunderbird. You should do the following: de-activate real-time protection in BD, empty your trash in Thunderbird, compact the Trash folder (by right-clicking on it and selecting "Compact") and re-activating the online protection from BD. This should do the trick.

    Best regards.
