Antivirus 2008 - Virus Shield Service Won't Start

I have the following issue:


HP DV9000t laptop w/Windows Vista Ultimate x64. Fully patched OS. It has been running BitDefender Antivirus 2008 since October. Sometime in December an update was automatically downloaded by BitDefender and now the Virus Shield service will not start. If I try to start the service in Services.mmc I get a message stating that "the service shutdown because it has nothing to do". It will not start, even upon reboot. All other services start. If I shutdown all BitDefender services and try and start them manually none of them will start. Upon reboot all services start except for the Virus Shield.


I have completely removed BitDefender, rebooted, re-installed. The re-install works fine if I do not update th e product as part of the process. I disable automatic updates. I download the weekly update from the BitDefender website and apply it with no problems. As soon as I enable automatic update something gets downloaded that breaks BitDefender.


I have set the program to manual download of the weekly update. However, this is not optimal. Could BitDefender please look into this and fix whatever was released this month? Your program worked perfectly up until December.
