[resolved] Browser Sandbox

Is the content of the browser sandbox deleted when the browser is closed? I would thing it would be. If not, how do I empty it?

I ask this because I downloaded a file while Chrome was sandboxed and went back later to redownload. I then received a message that the file already existed in the location where I initially downloaded it. I shouldn't receive this message if the contents were emptied when the browser was closed.

I cleared out all Chrome browsing data. After doing this I restarted Chrome (unsandboxed) and the website where I requested the download required a user name and password, as it should. I then sandboxed Chrome and up came the website showing that I have already signed in. The contents of the sandbox are definitely not being deleted. The sandbox shouldn't continue to store this information after the browser has been closed.

I did a little research of my own using FF, and my conclusion is that it is separate from the default version in that it is storing it's own browsing history, each with it's own history of where I went. I did the same clearing history, log in, searching and downloading options you tried in Chrome. Sandbox did see a download that was previously downloaded in the default version.

While logged in here at the forum, I opened Sandbox and it opened the homepage I was on, but did not show me logged in, nor my LastPass being logged in (as it was in my default FF). Same with MaximumPC, I logged in on the default FF, opened Sandbox, and it opened to the webpage I was on, but was not logged in. So at least that seems to be working.

I'm not sure if it's supposed to be clearing its history upon closing, as that would be more of an Incognito, or in FF, Private browsing feature (of not storing info). I think Sandbox is more of a exploit prevention driven feature, and not so much of a not keeping track of history, cookies etc and deleting them when the session is over. CCleaner did clear Sandbox browsing history. So I think it pretty much "acts" the same way as the default browser, but with a little more shielding than the normal Bitdefender Antiphishing version.

I suppose you could enable Sandbox, then enable an Incognito window (which is still in Sandbox mode) and have a browsing experience just below a Safepay session.

I thought the sandbox storage folder was here -> C:\ProgramData\Bitdefender\Desktop\OBK\Chris\storage

But it appears empty even after showing hidden and system files. I'm not really sure if this is it or not. I didn't really see anything in appdata that showed a sandbox storage folder. For security reasons, I would figure it would delete all data when closing the browser. It's hanging on to my login info and downloads. I can not download the same file twice to the same location. I don't see the usability in this. I am going to try ccleaner but am curious to know which setting in ccleaner will clean the sandbox storage folder. I wouldn't figure ccleaner would have any permissions to this folder.

My opinion is that the contents of the sandbox storage folder should be deleted each time the browser is closed. It's got to get rid of this data at some time and should not store login info without giving a way of deleting it.

I didn't even think of that, as I never thought of the Sandbox storage folder angle...you are just 2-3 steps ahead of me ;) CCleaner did clean it, not sure from where, but now that you brought these points, I am curious about it too :)

    Thanks for your input Columbo.

    I found this. -> http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=29607

Looks like it is going to have to be done manually. I'm debating on a feature request for this.

I found the folder. I am not going to post it here though. What do you think about having the option to close on exiting the browser and having a control to manually delete these files in the gui? So two options, 1. delete on close, 2. manual deletion... Kind of have to dig deep to find these files.

Or, according to the other thread in my previous post, http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=29607, not at all. :)

At least I now know. These are those user mode options we keep discussing.

  • Nice link you found there Charyb :) I didn't even know what or how Sandbox was handling these files. Thanks for posting the Feature Requests on behalf of all of us, we'll see what comes of it, as what can be done to automatically "clean house" after Sandbox has been closed.

Again, nice curiosity of, "why and how?" concerning Bitdefender.

    Hello Christian,

    I found that file :)

By the way i think this is too difficult and complicated way for cleaning Sandbox contents.

Charyb has set a very interesting request Delete Contents Of Sandbox

I think his suggestion is a very useful and should be seriously considered in the near future.

    Thank you very much.

  • Hello :)

    I saw that topic.
