Data Protection By Itself

I'm just a little confused by the Data Protection settings in BDTS 2013. If I am not going to create any data protection rules individually should I just leave the top box checked to "OFF"? I am assuming that this form of data protection is for like credit cards and bank data, things like that? I guess what I want to know is if I have to create these rules for what normal security suites protect me for while I use my machine. Like normal internet traffic and things like that. My email.....???
