Hard Drive Storage Keeps Steadily Spiraling Down

I did not have any big download for the last one month, yet my hard drive space has been steadily on the decline. The only prime suspect is BitDefender, because the decline seems to coincide with some BitDefender updates. After some updates, several hundred MBs would disappear, then half of them would come back several minutes later.

I first noticed it when I was using BitDefender 2012 (until 2 days ago). I took the free upgrade to BitDefender 2013. My available free space on disk C is ~13.3GB after installing BD 2013. At the moment of this email, it's ~12.3GB. In fact, there was a BD update just 5 mins ago. Before the update it's 12.5GB, after the update, it's 12GB, and now it's 12.3GB. I tried to find out where the memory has gone to no avail.

If this can't be fixed, I'm afraid I'll run out of space soon. If you can't give me a permanent update to fix it, at least please tell me if you happened to [mistakenly] write tons of temporary data somewhere so that I can delete them while waiting for your fix [which would take long to come, per my experience.] Otherwise, I'd have to give up with BitDefender for good. Having too many hassles lately with it.

Thank you very much,

R.

  • Bitdefender occupy huge space while downloading the updates, I had a long discussion on chat and emails long ago for the 2011 product, that the update process will remain like that. Actually bitdefender while downloading updates makes the backup of old update database and then install/update the new one and delete the previous one. But hopefully someone from the Technical Support will provide you better explanation of update mechanism.

  • Thanks for your clarification, ONT, while I'm waiting for technical support to respond. :)

I perfectly understand the need to back up old data and delete them afterward. However, what happening is a steady decline of my storage space. The trend is that everyday, an amount of X space disappears from my C drive, and X/2 reappears later, which means my storage is shrinking everyday. I've just been on BD 2013 for 2 days. Right after installation, there was 13.3GB free. Now there's 12.3GB. And that occurred within 2 days. With this trend, if the tech support doesn't solve it within a week, it looks like I will only have 2 choices: either uninstalling BD for good or removing other programs to make room for BD storage-crunching appetite.

  • Hello :)

How many GB have you allocated for the OS partition?

Did you used a temporary files cleaner like CCleaner or other?

    Take care.
