No Network Icon, No Internet Connection.

I downloaded the Bitdefender rescue CD a few days ago. When it runs, it does not connect to the internet, and there is no network connection icon in the box at the bottom of the screen. There is the xfce mouse logo, the Bitdefender On-demand Antivirus Scan notification (if running), the digital clock, and the "running man" logo.
I confirmed the checksum, and burned two CDs. The same situation exists with both CDs. Firefox gives me an error message, and suggests I check my internet connection etc.
