Windows Installer Returned 1638

Hi guys

I'm running windows vista premium and previously installed Bitdefender total security 2008, however, that caused so many problems that I had to uninstall it and tried BD anti virus V10 Free edition

it did run flawlessly for a while then it was rejected by o/s after some silly update

I've attempted to correct the problem by reinstalling and was unable to do so due to above error.

I've used uninstaller posted on the BD website and run it numerous times to no avail.

manually removed all files, deleted registry keys...

sadly enough, still getting error 1638 which basically tells me that there is a version of this software currently installed/running and of course installation stops.

tried in safe mode which actually blocks any kind of windows installers

what would be your suggestion on which processes (if any) to terminate

and which files or registry keys (that I obviously missed) to delete

any help will be much appreciated.

Hello twk,

Please download and install this program. Run it and search for entries that have BitDefender in the name if so select that entry by left clicking on it and press on remove confirm the warning. Look also for entries with only numbers it must look like this 11.X.XX (where x are numbers) and press also on remove. Reboot your pc and try again.
