Bit Defender 2013 Total Blocks Windows Update

Built a new system.
Installed Win7 Pro
Installed Bit Defender 2013 Total Security, hooking up to the internet for the very first time, and had the installation program get updated files for the installation.
Updated BD again. Left everything on the default settings.
Tried to update Win7, which was a total failure. I eventually had to disable the BD Firewall, activate the Windows firewall, and then update windows with no problem.
This really will not do. I put AVG on a new system last week and had no problems.
What is the problem?
