During the scanning phase, there are many BitDefender icons in the system tray. Is this normal?
Everything on the scanned drive grinds to a halt.

No, it certainly isn't normal. You should have only your "normal" BD icon and one animated to show you are scanning.
I suggest you run a repair to see if that solves the problem - Control Panel>Programs and Features>Bitdefender>Uninstall> choose Repair. Let it complete and then reboot, see if that solves the problem.
