Virus Destroying My Internet Connection

Options

Dear all,

I was wondering if you could help me. I have been having problems with my internet connection - it cuts out and I have to restart my computer. I checked with the service provider and they can find nothing wrong.

It has since got worse where I can use it to browse, but anything else and it cuts off. When the connection dies, core 1 of my processor goes just crazy, 100% usage for that one core. Everything slows down on screen, becomes jerky and again I have to restart the machine.

Bitdefender Internet Security 2008 (fully updated) has found 'Application.Pup.l' but can't get rid of it.

I didn't find anything specifically when researching 'Application.Pup.l' but it sounded like a virus that caused similar problems with internet connections and processors, just can't find where I read it.

Has anybody come across this before or know how I can get rid of it??

Appreciate any help!

Neil

Your PC may contain viruses, so i suggest you to run ComboFix that will investigate and eliminate all infections it may found (if it has them in its database).

    Download ComboFix from here: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Then close all running programs, including web browser, instant messenger, etc and then run ComboFix.

It will ask you whether it should start cleaning or not. Press 1 and hit Enter. Don't stop it while running. While doing this your screen may disappear but don't worry, it's a normal behaviour.

At the end ComboFix will generate a log file. Save it and post it here + another HijackThis log ! ;)

  • Trying running it, but says it is not compatible with 64-bit OS system.

I forgot that you have a 64 bit Os

    Sorry for that ! :(

Check this in HijackThis an press Fix checked.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Vga meal] "C:\ProgramData\cash ref ref.bkt4g5"

Reboot in Safe Mode and try to detele that ! ;)

  • no worries crysty2k5! I appreciate the help!!!

I Fix Checked in HijackThis like you said, rebooted in safe mode, however unfortuantely windows just kept hanging when I tried to delete the file.

Couldn't do much is safe mode, it seemed more insecure than when running normally. Just hung when trying to get into 'Computer'. Eventually (after a few tries) got the file, but then everytime it just hangs when I even try to do anything to the file - can select it, but if I press delete, or right click on it, the vista waiting symbol starts and doesn't stop.

After all that I did try using Bitdefender in safe mode, but it wasn't able to remove the Application.Pup.l - though wasn't expecting it to, just thought I should eliminate that potential solution.

Do you know of anything else I can try, or am I just going to have to wait until Bitdefender come up with a fix?

    Thanks again for the help,

    Neil
