What A Waste Of Money!

OK, have sent off an email to tech support & have had no response so here I am & by reading many of the comments here its probably a waste of time posting but I hate being dupped with second rate software & no service. You guys must have paid someone to get good reviews!

After losing countless hours trying to work out why IE7 does not work all of a sudden & why I keep losing my connection to the net AND Outlook keeps crashing courtesy of BitDefender, I found out your firewall is the most likely cause.

Of course I had to reinstall IE7 from scratch & try a million other possibilities before eventually seeing if BitDefender had anything to do with it. (I just love wasting my time on paid for software).

As stated on your Support pages regarding a Firewall issue it says "After a recent product update the Firewall driver has been modified causing the Internet Connection to stop working" "The situation has already been fixed by our team. At the moment the patch solving this issue has been released through Live Update! However there are cases where the solution has to be applied manually."

Of course you have to be a detective to find all this out. Thanks for letting us know.

To make matters worse I have attempted to follow the steps you claim will rectify the problem. however the links to the patches at STEP A & STEP E do not link to anything! Great, you've done a really good job on this one.

What are you going to do about this or are you simply happy with fraudulent claims on how good your software & your service is?

Comments

  • The links point to 2 batch files, which have to be saved on your HDD (right click -> Save target as) and then executed.

Browsers have a habit of showing BAT files as text, and that's why apparently the links don't go anywhere. But saving the files and running them works.

Also, something that's omitted on that page is to run the second patch in SafeMode.

The link to that article is found in BitDefender Knowledge Base, and also it was discussed on the forum when the patch was launched. Also, you could have find out the link to that article if you tried LiveAssistance and described them your problems (That's how I first found out about the patch).

  • Hello Cris,

I appreciate you trying to assist. I was not aware that I had to do that with the patch files, it was not explained on the support page. Trouble is they presume that people know things about software & computers when all I am really interested in is getting my work done & not tinkering with software all day.

Anyway, I tried what was suggested & it did not work, in fact it screwed up BitDefender to the point I decided to uninstall & re-install from fresh with the CD. Took quite awhile but it seems that the problem is fixed. I hope it stays that way otherwise come renewal time I will be looking elsewhere.

By the way I did try livesupport & no one was home (twice).

The links are correct. If the files were not BAT files, when you would have clicked the link, a download dialog would have appeared. But, as I said, since they are BAT files, browsers tend to display them as text instead of asking you to save them locally. It's not a matter of "assuming the users know everything", it's just a small thing that was overlooked when the article was posted.

Also...in short, the first patch is meant to delete some of BD's files (to be exact, the firewall driver). Then, by running BD Update, BD should detect the missing driver and then download the driver from the update server. Then, using the second patch, the new driver should be registered and ready to be used. If one of these steps is done incorrectly, BD will remain broken.

Unfortunately, there is no easier way of doing this, except reinstallation which, from obvious reasons (you loose al settings) is avoided by most users.

Yes, there are sometimes problems with the updates. There's no perfect software, and the team is trying to make it as good as possible. But sometimes problems occur, and everyone affected has to deal with them one way, or the other.

We are sorry for any inconveniences.
