Bitdefender update 1 hour+ cannot use laptop

At 6:45 AM I was reading emails on my laptop when everything stopped. The cursor would no longer respond to the mouse. I could not launch Task Manager for 10 minutes. Now I have Task Manager running. I have shut down all apps. BitDefender is the culprit with high memory and disk usage.


I went for my morning walk. At 7:55 AM my laptop is still unusable. I attempted to open an Excel spreadsheet. 10 minutes later still not open.  This is infuriating. I need to work. Fortunately I have a second laptop that I can use for email and browser.


Why does Bitdefender update take over an hour?  Why doesn't BitDefender do updates when computer is not in use? Why do I need a second computer if I have Bitdefender?  Why doesn't Bitdefender consider that its customers need to use their computer for things other than running Bitdefender?
