Does subscription renewal auto update to the latest version?

I am due to renew my subscription but the last one I took out was Total Security 2016. Will this automatically update to the latest or do I need to do this manually? And is it worth updating? And is the cost the same? I have 3 different types of devices that need protecting at this stage - laptops, android, ipad.
