hMailServer running very slow in Windows Server when Antimalware On-access Scanning is turned on

The setup:
Windows Server 2019
Bitdefender Endpoint Security Tools running on the server
hMailServer running on the server as the mail server
Thunderbird used as the mail client on laptops
IMAP accounts
Mail folders not stored on the laptops for offline use to avoid issues on slow connections

The problem:
1) With the BEST policy set to Antimalware On-access Scanning - On, opening a mail folder on a client takes many, many minutes. Opening an e-mail takes minutes. Endpoint Security Console uses 30% of the CPU on the server constantly.
2) With the BEST policy set to Antimalware On-access Scanning – Off, mail folders and e-mails download and open almost instantly. Endpoint Security Console on the server drops to a low level.

Clearly setting Antimalware to be permanently off is not acceptable. What are the possible options for configuring BEST to recover e-mail download speeds without sacrificing security?
