How can I open downloaded PDF documents?

I installed Bitdefender about a month ago after using another product trouble free for 10 years. I have a number of downloaded PDF documents which I can't open now and I can only assume it's something to do with settings in Bitdefender. I am an elderly person with little tech knowledge so I'm hoping I can get an idiot's guide on what to do. Many thanks.

    Can you provide us with more details, what exactly happens when you try to open the documents and do you receive any pop-up message displaying an error? If you could take a screenshot of that message, it would prove very helpful for us to advise further.
