New user - first system scan vs second

I am a now a Bitdefender user starting 3 days ago! My first system scan took over 10 hours while the second only just over 6 hours. But I noticed something that I cannot understand. The log for the first scan reported it had scanned 30,561,497 items while the second reported scanning 3,396,151items. This is 10 fold difference! How can this be explained?

I should also note that the first scan found 59 infected items. These were all in old email files and had clearly been missed by my previous anti-virus applications. After deleting the second scan was clean. Full marks to Bitdefender for finding these.

This was very helpful and makes a lot of sense. There is no point in re scanning old email files which are not changing!

Once again, I am very impressed by the way that Bitdefender found theses historic infected emails and dealt with them. Previously 2 have your main competitors did not find anything amiss. Thanks!!
