bdservicehost using one CPU indefinitely

I am running Bitdefender Antivirus Free, Build 26.1000.32.77 on a Windows 10 desktop. My TaskManager has shown "bdservicehost" taking up one full thread of CPU load (which is 25% CPU utilization on my 4-core machine) continuously for at least the last 8 hours. It's consuming about 440 MB of memory, which is not a problem. But what is it doing with all of those cycles? Its disk and network load show as 0%.
Thinking that this particular process instance might have gone bad, I invoked the "End task" command on it, in my Task Manager. Intriguingly, this had no effect; it continues computing away, just as before.
Is it doing anything useful? If not, how can I stop it?
