Thunderbird Again

Following my battles with Thunderbird (outlined below) it is worth pointing out that although it is basically working again, every time I empty my deleted folder, my 'spam' sub-folder is also deleted. Until I put it back, the antispam toolbar is greyed out. This seems rather stupid. Is there any way of stopping this? Simply moving the spam sub-folder to be a general sub-folder does not work; the antispam functionality is disabled unless the spam sub-folder is a specific sub-folder of 'Deleted'.
