Is This A Scam?
I have a friend who bought Bitdefender Total Security 2016 online. When they click on the link emailed to them they could not get it to install. So they called one of the 800 numbers from the support page on the web site. The guy on the other end takes control of their computer and then claims that their IP address has been compromised and something about a trojan (by the way this is a clean install of Windows 10). He then claims that they need to install some software on their computer to fix the problem and that it will cost them over $400 (can't remember the exact amount). This totally sounds like a scam to me. But I am sure they called one of the USA support numbers from the Bitdefender web site.
Any advice?

Hello Quazitron,
Where was the BD Total Security bought from? Certainly installing some other software and charging for it is not correct.
The instructions for downloading and setting up the program are available here - http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=59500

So they called again and actually got somebody who sounds like they are from Bitdefender. I know there are 2 numbers on the website, I assume they used the other one? But the first time they definitely called a number from the Bitdefender website listed for USA tech support and it took them to some scammer who claimed they were with Bitdefender and wanted to charge hundreds of dollars.
They said they told the legitimate Bitdefender guy this. Is it possible for these scammers to hijack legitimate telephone numbers? Anyway, they tell me Bitdefender is now installing...0 -

OK, at least it is being dealt with correctly now. If there are any other problems ask on these forums first, there are a number of helpful members who will point you in the right direction.
