[Fixed] VSSERV service keeps stopping/crashing
For a very long time now I have been dealing with the VSSERV service stopping/crashing and the BD icon in the tray turning gray and complaining about the service not responding.
This was happening once a day at first and now it is about 2-3 times a day.
There are no other anti-virus or security applications installed on the computer.
I have tried uninstalling BitDefender, restarting, then reinstalling, restarting, and running all pending updates and restarting again.
This issue was present in the 2015, 2016, and now the 2017 version.
PLEASE HELP!

Hello,
Please let me know what Windows build are you running on that machine.0 -
This is also happening to me.
I am running version 1703, build 15063.138.0 -
-
Have you tried the Repair option for BD ?
If that doesn't work, maybe uninstall using the BD Uninstall Tool to get a more complete uninstall, and then doing a fresh install.0 -
i tried BD repair tool
and also i unistalled BD with bitdefender unistaler 2017 in safe mode and normal mode (didnt help)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i've tested older versions of bitdefender too they wont work on win10 build 1703
i think only way to fix this is going back to the previous version of windows 10 (build 1603) until microsoft OR bitdefender releases an update to fix this problem.
or you can trust windows defender for a short time until they fix problem (which i did)0 -
I'm also running WIn 10 Creators V 15063.138 64 bit without issues. BD is working fine, and I have had no problems with BD services stopping.
If a clean install of BD doesn't work and a restart after, it might be a case of going back to a previous Windows build or a clean Win 10 install.0 -
I have the same issue and an open ticket, but not sorted out as yet... Tried repairing and even did a clean install...
You might try taking a look at the event viewer to see when it falls over and what the machine is doing at the time. For me it looks like my PLEX media server might be causing it - because that's the only thing running (watching TV over wifi) when all the errors starts0 -
Hello,
As of yet I was unable to reproduce this issue on our test beds.
We are currently investigating this issue. I'll keep you all updated on the matter.

My issue occurs after the system has been running for at least an hour or so, not really at startup.
For some reason I can't see this update, but I will install it as soon as it becomes available.

Hello,
Can you please also confirm that you are using the latest build of Bitdefender 21.0.25.80 and that the issue still persists.
Please note that the update requires a reboot to take effect.0 -
I'd like to add my two cents to this discussion. I am having similar issues as well. I can re-active the service when it goes off through services, but sometime later it goes off again. I am unsure if it is conflicting with anything else. I generally run splashtop, teamviewer, some torrent downloading and a plex server, also the communication server called murmur (mumble). I have contacted support and sent them information they requested, however they want to remote into my machine to check on things and i'm not sure how comfortable I am with that.
I also put firewall and virus scan exclusions to the plex server. Anyone figure out a solution? i'm concerned that my server is not protected for short periods of time. I even set up a reboot schedule to make sure the service stays on. Funny enough, i can't "access" the restart service under services as I believe its protected by bitdefender.
Hope someone has a solution. I have two other PCs that do NOT have this issue. SO i'm thinking software conflict?0 -

Highly advisable to use the uninstall tool to clean the machine and install + update + reboot. www.bitdefender.com/uninstall0 -
Been having the same issue for a while now, have both repaired and reinstalled the Total Security Application 2017, it made no difference whatsoever. Have subbitted logs to support about a week ago but havent received a responce (the support is very slow).
Have Plex, Subsonic and Deluge constanly running. The VSSERV service only seems to fail when streaming (reencode not direct) from Plex specifically if i play and pause repeatedly, please could someone else try this?0 -
Dawg that might be it. I'm starting to see a pattern. I'll run some Plex movies and force my server to encode vs original quality.
I have installed latest version of bitdefender though so maybe that fixes things. I'll report back0 -

I broke this within moments a second and a third time when I tested it again. this IS the cause of our bitdefender services breaking. This has something to do with transcoding i believe. Unsure why.0 -

Hello all,
Yesterday was released a new build 21.0.25.84 which should fix this type of crash.
Could you please follow first the steps below?
1. Bring up Bitdefender and click on Update Now.
2. Wait until the update process completes, then click the notifications (bell) icon from the left side and select the Critical tab.
3. Locate in the list the update event asking to reboot the computer. Click on it and then click 'Restart Now' button in the displayed details.
Note: If you don't see the notification to reboot the computer in events simply restart Windows.
4. After the computer reboots, make sure you have the latest build: right click on the Bitdefender icon from the system tray (the area near Windows clock), choose About and look at the Product Information number. It should be 21.0.25.84.
We are looking forward to your results.0 -

Hi there, i've emailed you a 7zip of the dump file after i force crashed the services by playing a video on the Apple Plex app. Fastest way to break it seems to be through that.

Thank you so much for taking the time to submit the requested dumps. I managed to retrieve all of them.
You can now prevent Windows from generating other dumps as follows:
1. Download the file RemoveCrashDump.regX and rename it into RemoveCrashDump.reg
2. Run it and confirm the change.
3. Delete the folder C:\CrashDumps
I have sent the dumps to the Bitdefender developers for debugging, and when a fix will be available you will be notified here. As a temporary workaround - until the fix is released - you can install Bitdefender 2016 from here and activate it with the same Central account.
PS: if anyone else is still experiencing vsserv crashes after updating Bitdefender 2017 to the current version 21.0.25.84 please post back your dump files, to check if the root cause is the same.0 -

Can you clarify, is this an issue with the software, is this some kind of intrusion into my system? i'm getting pretty concerned here. Please let me know what my next steps are. If it's a software issue that's fine, i am sure you'll fix it, but if it's something else, i'd like to know.

I haven't tried 2016 yet, but mine only seems to crash when Plex is streaming something. I do have TeamViewer installed and I also use Microsoft Remote Desktop to connect to the server on which BitDefender's crashing, but the crashes don't seem to correlate to remote access (they happen even when I'm not connected or trying to connect).0 -

Bitdefender 2015 also disables service very quickly as soon as I start streaming anything with transcode. Was able to break it in seconds as soon as I started streaming through my IPAD (transcoding video). Generally its safer without transcoding.

Might as well also replay. have the exact save problem with the crashes... i do not have teamviewer or use Microsoft Remote Desktop.
I do use Plex sever and indeed VSSERV crashes when its steaming.
So far i repaired, reinstalled and even formatted my entire PC. but nothing has worked.
My laptop that has almost the same software but no Plex server seems to work OK.
