You should ask if potential damage done is covered by AppleCare. If not, you should try to claim with BitDefender. But first you have to find out what the left over lifespan of your SSD is now. Hopefully they can somehow measure what happened and how much damage is done.

  • I just found this forum while researching this problem. I've had Bitdefender for Mac for about a year. In the last couple of days I noticed unusual CPU usage and bdagentd was the culprit. I have an iMac and I didn't see any increased temps, but there was a lot of data being written to my SSD. I don't know how long this was going on before I noticed it, and this concerns me. I decided to uninstall Bitdefender using their uninstall utility. This eliminated the problem. Frankly, I'm not sure I'll reinstall Bitdefender even if they figure out why this happened. This wasn't a minor bug.

I think also they approach this way too lighthearted. Was chatting with support an hour ago, don’t have the impression anyone is working on this bug. It’s after working time there, after all. :-( This should really have been elevated to top priority in my opinion. Software that causes hardware defects are very rare, but if such a problem exists it’s very serious matter. Must say I am dissappointed in the action taken. Or rather not taken. :-/ Also, they seem to forget when Europe is sleeping, the other half of the world is not.

thank you...i would not have known where to start so i greatly appreciate the info... i'm hoping apple can tell...glad i got the screen shots. and there is probably tons of log details somewhere! i best back up this thing....

i completely agree with your last post. it is disappointing...i emailed support yesterday and have not heard back...

  • I've uninstalled BD yesterday, now my MBP works quiet and smooth :)

I'll wait for a few days, although this is unacceptable that they can't fix problem for four days. Depending on their actions meanwhile I'll take my decision should I stay here or find other reliable AV.

I also see that it stays VERY quiet from the side of Bitdefender. I really expected a reply on my support mails etc and an emergency patch. I fear though that they are just too small to handle such major bugs very efficiently. Think it’s time to move on to some other solution, because I can’t let my expensive hardware be destroyed by some piece of software. Days of writing terabytes of garbage data is just ridiculous. I foresee a class action lawsuit in the near future :-(((

  • Same issue here on both of my macs. This is simply not acceptable. I've had this problem since buying Bitdefender over a year ago and it's getting worse with every update. Consistently hogging 80-95% of CPU causing my machines to heat up to the point I'm having to run MacFans program with the fan on full blast constantly. Will check back in a few days to see if there's a fix, if not I'm taking my business elsewhere.

A few days for me is too much, this bug is destroying my hardware.

Situation got much worse, now continuously around 90% cpu, 20 GB written in only a few minutes, noticable system slowdown. PLEASE Bitdefender, do something about this major bug.

  • Same thing here. Please fix this ASAP as I cannot remove the AV from this PC.

Called Apple once more, they say this is damaging hardware. Might not fall under guarantee. Is anyone from Bitdefender reading along? If so: what is the status of a bug fix? We must know, it’s in the middle of a hot summer and systems get overheated. At least make it possible for us to roll back to a stable version!

  • Have Bit Defender just sorted out this problem but not put a post to say so on this forum?

I just turned my Mac back on with the intent of uninstalling BD and it came up with a BD update.

Following this, at the moment, bdagentd is not coming up on my activity monitor, and my mac is running cool with no fan running. Is it too soon to hope this is now fixed and I can get back on with my work?

What was the cause of the problem? Was BD hacked I wonder? Is there anything left to worry about?

94% for long times in a row now. No resolution at all. Tried a manual update, no relieve. Maybe you are lucky or some Bitdefender processes just crashed. That means the problem is gone, but your protection also.

  • Just reinstalled BD an hour ago and no nasty bdagentd cpu burn at all..

  • Just restarted computer, bdagentd even higher cpu will uninstall now and once again a reinstall. WHY on earth no one from Bitdefender replies here?

  • Unfortunately the absence of bdagentd following the BD update after I switched my mac back on and BD did an automatic "update" was not sustained, and so I have now uninstalled it.

I would be interested Cooltalk to hear from you again later if, having reinstalled it, this is a sustained fix for you and that bdagentd CPU hogging stays away on your machine.

I find Bit Defender's lack of updates on this forum about where this problem has arisen from, whether they putting any appreciable resource/priority on sorting it and any update on when, or if, it will be fixed disappointing to say the least.

Nooo, I am just reinstalling it. Without reason now, I see :-((( lost time again. I am getting very angry right now.

  • BITDEFENDER, YOUR SOFTWARE IS DAMAGING MACS ON A LARGE SCALE. WE NEED ANSWERS. NOW

Reinstall does seem to solve the problem. Didn’t restart after reinstall though. This I will do in a moment. Will keep you all updated. Unfortunately I see Bitdefender downloading and installing an update. This might be once again the broken version :-(

  • Lo and behold! The bug has dissappeared. Switched off mac completely and turned it on again. So somehow there is a newer version available. Looks like a normal update is not working, Bitdefender and its folders have to be completely uninstalled/removed first and then installed again. Can someone from Bitdefender confirm a bugfree version?

  • I run now this version, can anyone confirm this is a new one? Forgot to check the old version number :-/

    Same here.

    Was awful with version 6.2.2.2.

Uninstalled, and just re-installed, now version 7.0.0.4, and all seems to be fine.

  • Finally... I'll got to Central and download it again. Let's see if the bug has disappeared. I'll come back with feedback.

  • The issue continues for me with 7.0.0.4, this time it's not BDAgentD but BDUpdDaemon.

Was initially on 6.2.2.2 when the issue with BDAgentD started. Installed 7.0.0.2, issue remained. Finally just did the clean install of 7.0.0.4 but now BDUpdDaemon is the problem with 90%+ CPU usage. Strangely it's got the Dock clocking in at 80%+ too despite a restart after installation. Abysmal!

  • In five years I am yet to see Bitdefender detect anything.

Wondering if others are considering uninstalling permanently, asking for a pro-rata refund and just running Malwarebytes?

  • That update Daemon may stop soon. Mine stopped after a few minutes, after the fresh install.

  • Hello everyone,

A fix was released earlier today but it will take up to 24 hours to reach all our users.

A fresh install from your Bitdefender Central account will ensure you have the update as well.

It was the same for me. Let it do it's thing....it should stop after few minutes, and when it stops, you should get a notification saying that an update has been installed.

I waited for the BDUpdDaemon  to finish and rebooted my machine. It looks like everything is fine now. Yara Scan Service has hold my CPU up for few minutes, until I killed it.

Now everything seems to be fine. No crazy CPU scores, nothing abusing my SSD. All good here.

  • I've had the same problem with CPU usage by bdagentd reported by everyone else in this thread, for several days running. Rebooting or turning off AutoPilot didn't help. I just manually updated from v6.2.2.2 to v7.0.0.4, and so far (after about 30 minutes) CPU usage is back to normal. That's good! We will see if it continues.

I have a family license, and have installed BD on several other computers for family members. Unfortunately, the web interface at Bitdefender Central doesn't show which version these other computers are running, and I'm not sure how long it will take them to get an automatic update. If anyone from Bitdefender is listening, this would be a useful bit of information to add to the web interface.

    Hi!

Could you please inform us about what happened and what were those continuous writes about? And is there a chance this will ever happen again? Is it possible to build in a self-protecting mechanism in which Bitdefender checks the cpu/hd-usage of its various processes? And show a warning when something runs out of control?

    Greetings,

    Ron.

  • Works fine here too. Glad that everything is OK.

  • Normal service appears to have resumed here too.

Powered off overnight, started up this morning, Notification of BD update, no more excessive CPU processes.

    Interestingly, I'm running version 6.2.2.2

The update was for the Bitdefender Agent which is why the version of the main product did not change. You can get version 7 (the 2019 version), by reinstalling.

  • I installed the latest version and it did seem to resolve the CPU usage problem. However, the installer automatically installed Bitdefender's VPN. I already use a VPN that I'm happy with and I don't like software developers installing software without my permission. I couldn't find any way to uninstall the VPN without also uninstalling the antivirus software.

I know that I can set the Bitdefender VPN to not run at login, but that's beside the point. I'd like to control what software is on my system. So I uninstalled Bitdefender yet again.

I agree that this should have been an option that was asked permission for during install

This whole story made me worried about the nearing macOS system upgrade to Mojave. Already Bitdefender support advised me to uninstall before applying the upgrade. And then reinstall the scanner. Must keep that in mind somehow.

I just deleted it from the Applications/Bitdefender folder.  Agree it shouldn't install by default especially when it is chargeable for full features.

It seems to start all over again. This time BDLDaemon is the troublemaker, continuously at around 99% cpu usage after a program update yesterday. PLEASE BITDEFENDER DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS MESS, SOMETHING IS FAR FROM OK IN YOUR PRGRAMMING DEPARTMENT!!! I am going to look for another scanner, this is unworkable. :-((((

  • Yep back to square one <img class=" data-emoticon="" src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6031943/uploads/ipb_attachments/emoticons/default_angry.png" title="" /> running like this for over an hour now

  • Ok, this problem stopped by itself. Maybe a background scan was going on? But why Bitdefender never mentions that then?

  • Well, I uninstalled BitDefender and bought ESET Cyber Security PRO. Problem solved! Too bad I had payed for the BD one year subscription, money thrown away.

  • After chatting with support, this one looks like a case of just bad timing. Where a background scan was running, but ALSO a program update came in. After a while a notification appeared which toldme that Bitdefender downloaded updates and required a restart. It would be sooooo handy if the main window of the scanner shows what it’s doing at such moments...

Thinking about that too. The disadvantage is that now I know what to expect from Bitdefender, other software might have other quirks...

Exactly the same here, CPU pegged at 100%. The iMac was starting to get above usual CPU temps, thankfully I caught it after about an 30 minutes. Restarted and the pending update appeared to fix the issue. Now running 7.0.1.2

I've ran Antivirus for Mac for over a year without any issue (install and forget), however these two recent issues/events are starting to concern me! I shouldn't be worrying/thinking about AV software, it should just do it's thing quietly in the background. I think I've had 3 updates/restarts required in this last week alone!

I also don’t know what’s going on. By accident, I also discovered Bitdefender interferes with Time Machine lately in a very bad way. Actually, it sometimes stops backups without any warnings, up to the point I had only one copy per day (made after logging in). Turned out that the scanner stubbornly scanned some excluded folders with archived mail from many years ago. I tried to exclude not the main folder, but simply all the subfolders in it. Also got the advice from support to switch off the option Time Machine protection, which I did. Hopefully my backups will run as usual from now on. Such bugs are worrying though. And was is irritating is that nowhere a revision history is available, so you never know what is fixed in an update :-/

    Hi,

At this moment, we do not have an uninstaller for the VPN. It can only be uninstalled if you remove Antivirus for Mac. We have already sent a request to add an uninstaller.

Indeed, for the users who do not want to use  the VPN , it may be set not to run its services.

    Hello,

When BDLDaemon is using a lot of CPU, it indicates that Bitdefender is scanning something in the background. In your case, it seems that it was scanning the backups. You should make sure that the option to scan in the backups is disabled.

If you notice that BDLDaemon is using a lot of CPU, please contact us bitsy@bitdefender.com.  We are sorry for the hassle we have caused lately.
