Subs don't merge - will license key expire?

Hello all. Hoping for some license key advice ...
I saw a good price on the Family Pack and thought/hoped it would merge with my Total Security subscription, but it doesn't look like it will.
If I hold onto the key and then put it in when my current subscription runs out (in just over a year), will it still work? I'm not sure whether license keys expire if not used for a while.
