@stphen: Please make a System Restore in order to restore mpr.dll and then try again to run the patch.
@Rigolax: Please restart your computer in Safe mode. Go to Run -> Search -> type Services.msc and hit enter. Double click on the BitDefender Virus Shield. Set the Startup type to Manual, click Apply and then OK.
Restart the computer in Normal mode and try again to follow the steps from this article.
@vegardS: We are glad to notice that your system is up and running and we are very sorry for the valuable things you lost. We appreciate the feedback from you and we will make the best we can to transform this experience in a valuable lesson for us to learn.
@manos: Please try to make the System Restore in Safemod and let us know if the issue persists.0 -
first off...I just gotta say to the public, this "fakealert" thing is not too damaging when you have a pc with win 7 x64. when you reboot, yes it won't turn back on, but it automatically repairs itself. It might not work on the first try. It took me 3 tries I believe, but your pc will walk you through the system repair process, so don't stress if it takes a bit long. Go ENJOY your life away from the computer if your really impatient. Hit up a local beach or pool if you live in a sunny state like myself, if not, be creative. use the BRAIN god gave you to have fun. Anyways, by the time you get back, your pc should be up and running with no loss of anything. Yes, all of the files are still in quarantine but they're just copies, no longer are they the originals, so delete them all with confidence. Now my only question to the tech support is, my real time protection is off because I'm waiting for the update, I clicked "update now" and it says there are none. By the way the engine ver.: 7.30848. But I thought the new update/patch would be 7.30858 or something of that nature. So where do I get the update/patch so that this "little" dilemma doesn't happen again? And what's the engine version number after it's installed? Because I still have 300 and something days left and I just want to turn the real time protection back on and enjoy life without the worry that what happened yesterday could happen again. Thanks in advance

BD Team:
I applied the patch, and things are for the most part back to normal...I think.
HOWEVER: there are still 29 files that were quarantined that I can not RESTORE from the quarantine folder. All but 6 of them are dll files that belong in the Windows\system32 folder. When I try to restore them, it asks if I want to replace a file with the same name, and I click OK, then it says, "Failed to find the specified path", and when I Browse to the correct folder and click OK, it goes back to the first question "a file with this name exists - do you want to replace it". It is a loop. I cannot seem to restore these last 29 files. What should I do with them?

we need a tool for restore the files from quarantine folder. by using linux from a bootable cd!
thanks for that...please give me a response. i have black screen at all. vista 64bit. no chance to boot with your ideas0 -
have you tried to change the restore point? my win 7choose alone best back configuration ... maybe you have a better by choosing an older and once restarted immediately and permanently block REAL TIME PROTECTION (choose among various options .. 5 min - 1 h - permanently.)
Io ho Vista e ha fatto tutto da solo e, apprentemente, tutto funziona correttamente tranne BitDefender.
La protezione Real Time è bloccata permantemente.
Grazie per il tuo aiuto, spero che anche qualcuno di BitDefender si faccia vivo.
I run Vista and it did everything by itself. Everything seem to work fine except for BitDefender.
Real Time Protection is permanently blocked.
Thanks for you support, I hope that someone at BitDefender will help me.0 -

Hello.
Here http://news.bitdefender.com/NW1431-en--Tro...date-issue.html it says that the patch to restore all quarantined files will be available shortly.
I assumed that this patch http://www.bitdefender.com/site/KnowledgeBase/consumer/#640 is dealing with quarantined files recovery. I am right? Or this is the patch for something else?
Thanks for your reply.0 -
@presmanno: After running the patch, have you also followed the instructions from the KB article?
Please press CTRL+ALT+DELETE from your keyboard in order to enter in task Manager -> go to Process tab and let us know if the 'livesrv.exe' process is running.
@progmatrix: Please try to boot in SafeMode and run the patch, then try to repair it.
@guardion: Please let us know if you used the Windows CD in order to Repair the operating system after running the patch.
Also, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE in order to enter in Task Manager, go to the Processes tab and let us know if the 'livesrv.exe' process is running. Please also let us now if the same issue occurs after a reboot.0 -
i cant understand it, why use something that cost and will not protect you better then a free program?
i mean bitdefender cost and does not have the strong protection against viruses then a free security solution,
why not use that without any money and have more protection against viruses and malware and never have this kind of problem, why buy something that mess up your PC and that you get infected by Undetected viruses.0 -

I know my english is not perfect , but i written several times:
When i try to restore my system , a system repair say me "windows don't need repair because works perfectly.
Then i try to boot in normal, safe , or all other mode , but all time i have black screen.
What sense have make a patch working only in windows mode if we can't acces in windows?0 -

no - i did not use the windows cd to repair anything - there were "only" 58 files in quarantine and most of them
from system32 were in use - so they could not be deleted from their original place. but i restarted the computer

to
livesrv.exe not running - and it is not possible to start it with services.msc

OK, it's 4:30 AM and I am fried.... But I am up and running again...
Since the patch won't work for many (It did NOT for me) , I will show you what finally worked for me, since they don't seem to know the extent of what they have done to all these machines, and frankly, aren't helping much IMO.
Many seem to be stuck right where I was too. I could boot, but MANY of my useful programs had no registry values and couldn't be found, nor used, and I was getting errors trying to boot and fix things. Sound familiar? Particularly with MS Win 7 programs, such as office, and IE, etc... My son had rebooted as soon as the trouble began.
Step 1. I could NOT load BD, and I could NOT uninstall BD either, and it was not functional. Very aggravating to say the least! If you can't either, then load the trial version of BD onto your computer and install it. THEN UNINSTALL IT, and LEAVE IT OFF (at least for now while you are fixing your PC, if you want to stick with BD, it matters not to me) . Now, by leaving it uninstalled, BD won't hang your registry files in the quarantine, and block them from being reissued and re-set. It also wipes out the quarantine files. Which seems to be a GOOD THING. Now windows 7 CAN fix things without being blocked.
Step 2. I could boot up, and I had Firefox, but I could NOT do a system restore. This was because a start up file (or a few) were taken out by BD in the registry. Load your Win 7 disc in the drive and restart your PC. Press F8 during boot up. Select "boot from CD/DVD. This will fix the screwed up start up files by using the info on the disc. It fixes issues one at at time, so it may take a few starts, always booting from the disc. Once you have it booted up and running smoothly off of the disc, you are closer than you think, but none of your (non functional) programs will work yet. That's OK.
Step 3. Don't do this! At this point I tried something that I didn't think would work, but I had to try. I tried reloading Win 7 using the upgrade feature. I have SP2 Installed, and it WILL NOT load a SP1 disc over SP2, as I suspected, so forget that. You also DO NOT need to do a clean install and wipe everything either at this point.
Step 4. Do a system restore to a date that is a week or 2 back, (just to make sure it's a viable set up). NOW Win 7 can do it's magic, and WILL restore all of your settings and WILL restore your registry values, and will reconnect all your programs to the short cuts, and you will be back in business, WITHOUT doing a complete install. Because the start up files are fixed from the disc, and the BD is not holding registry values for ransom. You have untied Win 7's hands, so to speak.
I was good as new at this point. FINALLY.
But it seems you have to repair this damage in order. 1. Get rid of the program causing the problem. BD. Load it, and uninstall it completely. 2. Fix the hidden boot problems with the Win 7 disc, even though it boot_s, it's still goofed up. 3. Do a system restore.
I understand that there are a lot of variable here, and it isn't going to work for everyone because things have happened along the way differently for everyone. But I hope this helps a lot of people, and prevents a lot of clean installs, which is DEVASTATING to many. I thought I would have to , but I did not. THANKFULLY! (OMG you have no idea what this particular Alien, and myself, stood to lose with a clean install)
I don't care what anyone else chooses. I have decided that this incident shows that there are no proper checks and balances required at BD, and if they are, they are sloppy, and not being followed. Someone should have to check, and re check, and then someone should have to sign off on every update issued. Maybe they do, but just aren't doing it. I don't know, but it's a sign of sloppy corporate behavior and policy. The mistake was a mistake that tested tolerance as it was. The follow up, and implications since are causing me to look for another product.
And people like me, that have better things to do, are trying harder to help others (your customers) than BD seems to be. Sure your techs were behind the scenes making code and fixing software.... But...Politically and corporately correct, fluffy statements of apology were all that was being given, at best, from BD on the front lines. When getting into the trenches and digging in the mud to help people at all levels was what was needed here. To which there was none, aside from other customers willing to help strangers. Think carefully about that, and review this thread closely. It's true.
I did have most of my files on an external drive. My last bit of help here is to say...If you don't have an external flash drive, ...Go buy one. They are priceless for stuff like this. My current business and taxes from the last 2 weeks were not on there yet, and I was mighty nervous about that at first, but at least I had somewhere to put it, and it wasn't gone when this started thankfully. But I would have lost a LOT less had it been just a little bit worse. I learned this lesson on my Vista crash. Everyone needs one.
Cheers all.0 -
I was affected as well, Win 7 x64, BD 2010, last night. I got suspicious about the alerts, and luckily turned BD off before all my files were quarantined. Ran the patch publiced this morning, in my case it seam to work thus still a lot of system files quarantined.
Was this 1) a major fuckup by proffesional developers, 2) intentionally caused cyber-terrorism or 3) a real trojan ?
Please provide some technical insides about this issue if you want to regain consumer trust. I would like to know, esspecially for my security software, if it is trustworthy.
If no answer is provided about the cause of this meltdown, and if no compensation is given, I will demand a refund and find myself another security suplier!
Be looking forward to be hearing statements from CEO, or equivalent.

Hi, I have win 7 64bit. I have restored the system, applied the patch from your knowledge base article (http://www.bitdefender.com/site/KnowledgeBase/consumer/#640) but i still have a ridiculously large number of files in quarantine.
I have gone to bitdefender and manually updated (which installed update) and rebooted PC - still same problem (by the way, because there are so many files in quarantine it takes an age to open the quarantine tab!!).
What am i to do with all the quarantined files please?0 -
can someone answer me that, when i select all qurantina files then click restore, is it restoring all file then asking just same name file ? because i wanna ignore it and continiu my life ...

@ambeirao: Yes, as long as BitDefender is up to date, it is safe to restore the services. You can find here support on Spanish in forum.
@CoolCalmCollected: The good version engine is 7.30848 (the one which created these false positive detection was 7.30856). Therefore you have the right version and you should not receive any false detection from now on. By running the patch you have released you will restore the files from the BitDefender Quarantine.
@cdaforsyth: The files you are trying to restore are probably already restored by the operating system and this is the reason why you are receiving this error message. Please check if you have these files on your computer. If you do, you can simply delete them from the BitDefender Quarantine.0 -

Ok here is what i've got:
After BD devastated my System, the system wasn't able to boot. After a few hours of trying to fix that, I finally could log in to Windows. However, the System began bombarding me with error massages, caused by missing DLLs and EXEs. Bitdefender ist not running and a new installation or repair is not possible due to the broken windows installer. I believe that setting all files from the quarantine back to their orriginal file path would solve all problems, but how am i going to do that? As I said, bitdefender is not running and can't be fixed, by an update - I need to copy a clean Bitdefender installation folder, in order to get the missing dlls back. After that I hope that Bitdefender will be able to start up.
So please - can anybody send me his or her Bitdefender folder?
Using Bitdefender TotalSecurity on Win7 X640 -
Windows has repaired itself and I have installed the patch, rebooted and updated. Now the BD Total Security 2010 runs normal. There are no more false detection when I for example right click on "mspaint.exe" and scan manually, it says that no threats are found. It is a W7 Home Premium 64 bit pc.
When I do the same (patching, rebooting, updating) for BD Internet Security 2010 on an other W7 Home premium 64 bit pc, it still finds Trojan.FakeAlert.5. Why is this different for the two programs? What do I have to do?
The items in quarantine are also on my pc, so every file should be on my pc.0 -
Not, the Spanish forum is totally useless
From the beginning of the problem, only a few users have reported our problems, but we have not obtained any response from technical support.
The only thing that we can do for the present is to read this forum and to try to translate the solutions that are published here.0 -

I'm sure i'm not the only one who has gone through your recovery procedure but is still left with 1000's of files still in quarantine?
Incidentally, every one i have clicked on so far and tried to restore says it already exists so maybe your patch has worked - but seriously, do you expect me to check every one? THERE ARE 1000's OF FILES IN QUARANTINE!!!!
Still, enjoying listening to the pavement and pixies albums i bought yesterday!!0 -

On another note I have tried to log in to BD help to call them but I cannot log in using my correct details and when I ask for a password email I don't get one. Call me cynical if you like.0 -

Hi Daniel - I confirm Engine Version: 7.30848, Virus Signature: 5474032.
Please see my original post for what I have done so far - I have followed the KB instructions and run the patch - appeared to install and the PC rebooted?
I carried out a manual update when it had powered up again, it downloaded a 300KB update and asked to restart the PC - I did this - and this is where I am now.
I just tried a virus scan to see it was picking up trojan.falsealert.5 again and it didn't pick any up after say 2000 scanned files - i have stopped the scan after reading your post....
Please clarify what I am to do now?0 -

Everything should work ok now for both Windows and BitDefender, feel free to remove all quarantined files. Just to be certain you can look in the location specified in the Quarantine and see if you have the file already listed (i.e. you see in Quarantine the file C:\Windows\System32\qwe123.dll then you need to check in the same location in your computer to see if the file exists).

Ok I'm really going to cry now! After copying missing Bitdefender DLLs from another installation, Bitdefender WAS working again. I can't even update Bitdefender because my Windows installer ISN'T WORKING ANYMORE!!!!!!!0 -

I also had this problem. Instead of performing a system restore, I restored to "last known good configuration". This seemed to kick start the system restore restore process into action.

Hi Daniel, so update engine 7.30848 is the OK version - why did you say it was the wrong one?
As I already said (but I understand if you missed my post) I have 1000's of files in quarantine - i can't be expected to manually check each one before I delete them surely?
Are you lacking faith in the patch that you released to recover the quarantined files (sorry to sound critical) but I am feeling a little worried now after you questioned the current engine version I have installed.
Please advise0 -
Like all the others running a 64 bit machine I was affected yesterday. Fortunately, I did not reboot my computer and googled for the issue and realized that it was Bitdefender's own problem... disabled the live protection and my system continued to work "normally".
I haven't rebooted or shut down my computer since yesterday.
What I have is
virus sig 5474032
engine 7.30848
In the quarantine folder I have several files from windows and even from bitdefender... all can't be restored.
What I want to ask is... should I download the patch and run it?
Can I reboot the computer safely? Can I turn the live protection on?
I feel very very very lucky after having read some of the stories on here...0 -
Can anyone provide a link to the latest patch as BitDefender can't seem to find it.
Also, BitDefender is now finding Trojan.FakeAV.KUE!! It's nothing like the massacre of earlier, but this suggests all is still not well.0 -
@Okky: Correct, all files are removed if you uninstall BitDefender.
@Flasher: Have you follow this KB article? Please explain all the steps you took along with what error message(s) you receive.
@gyp371: I'm sorry however you understood me wrong. I asked for confirmation on the engine version to be certain that you have the good one. As already mentioned, feel free to remove all files from Quarantine if the patch was already run.
@hep1: The correct Engine version is: 7.30848 therefore you need to use the patch as explained Here0 -
Hi,
I have BitDefender 2009 vers 12.0.12.0 on Vista 64.
My system is alive now.
I used the patch downloaded from your site.
The only problem I see is that BD is not able to make an update.
There is a message "Bitdefender update service is not available" in Security Center".
All fields are gray.
...and - I dod not restarted the system after installing the patch. Should I?
Greetings,
Tom0 -
