How to remove time machine backup from a retired machine

I have a time machine drive that is getting full. it contains the active time machine backup for my current machine plus inactive time machine backups from earlier machines with different names. I see a directory for each machine in /Volumes/My Book for Mac/Backups.backupdb . I would like to remove the content for old machines in order to free up space for ongoing backups of the current machine.

When I try to sudo rm -r one of the inactive directories, BitDefender thinks I am malware and stops me. When I try tmutil delete -d xx -t yy it returns with

(null): Undefined error: 0 (error 0)

Do I have any option other than turnning off BitDefender during the duration? Or reformatting the disk?

  • Thanks for the information. I learned a number of new things but it did not address the immediate problem.

The correct procedure was to open BitDefender interface and navigate to the Anti-Ransomware tab. There I disabled time machine protection and was able to delete the backups of the retired machines. I also disabled backups during this time to avoid disk contention between backup and delete. I will renable time machine protection as soon as the rm completes.
