Checking other email clients OTHER than ONLY Gmail and Outlook

Ok, I don't sign up for discussions often. I just don't - but I feel I need to do so here. I have searched and know this topic has been discussed at various points in time and then… goes away. So I am reviving it - and maybe adding a twist.

All cards on the table, I do like most things about Bitdefender. Has it prevented ALL attacks? Of course not. I did have a remote takeover of my computer about 2 years ago, but that's another subject. I got lucky and stopped the ordeal losing only $100 in Amazon gift cards immediately redeemed. I blame myself more than Bitdefender. Some things are just out of hubris, arrogance, or ignorance on the part of the system user.

My issue is this: Bitdefender only checks Outlook and Gmail and not any other email clients. Of course, I can elect to have all my items funneled to Gmail or that other one (not worthy of a name) - BUT I don't. I won't. I refuse to use Gmail when I can avoid doing so. Reasons behind this are a different topic and I work differently than many users, but I am by no means "Special" or unique to my knowledge.

So, why doesn't Bitdefender explain its stance or fix it? That's what I want to know. How about the rest of you and your opinions? I am interested and thank you all in advance for you constructive input.

  • Hello @janthsimo and thank you for taking the time to open this discussion and share your thoughts with us.

I assume you are referring to the Email Protection feature? This feature detects spam, malicious and phishing emails when you check your emails in a browser. Incoming emails are filtered regardless of the browser and device you use to read your inbox. This Bitdefender feature shows labels indicating safe/dangerous emails that will be visible in web browsers. However, since Email Protection is primarily a webmail solution, the extent to which these labels appear in email applications like Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, etc. may vary. For now, Email Protection supports the Gmail and Outlook email providers and is a premium feature that comes with the following subscription plans:

However, despite the fact that this feature only supports the above email providers, Bitdefender will still protect you against email threats, regardless of the email you are using. Bitdefender Shield, the real-time protection feature included in the security software, provides continuous protection against a wide range of malware threats by scanning all accessed files and e-mail messages. Bitdefender will, for example, scan a Word document for known threats when you open it, and an e-mail message when you receive one. You can also configure the real-time protection settings in detail by creating a custom protection level, if desired.

Furthermore, since usually email threats come in the form of spam, if you have Bitdefender Total Security or Bitdefender Internet Security installed on your Windows computer, you can use the Antispam filter with any POP3/SMTP email application. POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) is a protocol used to download emails from a mail server and is supported by popular email applications like Outlook and Thunderbird. Here are some guidelines on how to avoid spammers:

And more information on Bitdefender's real time protection can be found here:

Essentially, Email Protection will conveniently label the emails in a browser for the supported email providers Gmail and Outlook, and this way you will be alerted of dangerous content before even opening the email. Not having this feature doesn't mean that you are totally unprotected from email threats, because Bitdefender will still block threats coming via email when you try to access dangerous content, regardless of what email you are using.

Now, regarding the Email Protection supporting other email providers for labelling, there are no foreseeable developments of further compatibilities and the expansion of this feature at this time.

I hope the information is helpful.
