License/activation Control & Enforcement
I am coming from Norton Internet Security Software. Their way of controlling the license/activation is not perfect. If I re-installed Windows, I will loose one activation (out of 3 activation or users per license). Then I have to talk to the customer support to get one activation back.
I understand the need to control license and activation to mitigate the piracy issue, but the way Norton do it is annoying.
I am testing out BitDefender 2011 right now. It looks good and work well. My concern right now is how BitDefender enforce the license/activation issue.
From reading questions and replies on this forum, I think BitDefender simply count the number of simultaneous usages. A security software is worthless if it doesn't update continuously. Thus, by counting how many unique computers (with the same license number) that try to update virus definition, BitDefender company can tell a particular license has how many users.
If what I thought is correct, this method of license control is very user-friendly. As long as at any point in time, you only have up to 3 computers using BitDefender of the same license, you are ok. If your windows crashed, just reinstall Windows and BitDefender and you will be ok. If you want to migrate your license, just stop using the old machine, put BitDefender on the new machine and you will be ok.
If this is true, I think it's a great and honorable way to treat the customers. Does anyone confirm what I thought is correct?

Hello Nathan,
Indeed, BitDefender policies and licensing methods are similar to what you described.0 -
I have 1 new laptop and 2 older PC"s. On all 3 of them IS2010 was installed. Licence had to be renewed. Customer support advised me to install IS2011 on the new laptop and to keep IS2010 on the older 2. Now the problem is that you get 1 new licencenr that only works in v2011 and is not accepted in v2010. So it is not possible to use different versions on different PC's. I contacted customer support several times but since last week still no reaction!! They promissed to contact me for a solution (2 licencennrs for 2010). My licences on the older PC's meanwhile has expired so they are unprotected...
Anyone with the same problem?0 -
If you look in my sig, I have BDAV 2011 installed on 2 PCs and BDAV 2009 installed on 1 older PC. All 3 are using the same 20-digit license key, so it can be done.
I'm sure when George sees your post, he will be able to help you.
