Auto Scan, Kill The Hard Drive

I am running BD 2013 Total Security. My understanding is that the AUTO SCAN feature constantly scans the hard drive when the computer is idle. If this is correct, won't this constantly scanning when the computer is idle, cause premature hard drive failure , or isn't the hard drive actually spinning when the AUTO SCAN is running ??
