Bitdefender Slows Internet And Other Programs

Hello all,

I just re-upped my BD install after one year of use. This time around, it's slowing down everything on my computer drastically. For example:

a) When I click to start any program such as chrome, starcraft ii, or anything of the like it takes a minimum of 10 seconds to open. My computer typically boot_s from cold start in under 20 seconds, so I am unaccustomed to such delays.

opening file explorer is instantaneous (no slowdown)

c) searching the web or just going to a new web address results in significant delay. Sometimes google searches freeze.

This is happening on both my install and my wife's install. We are both running 64-bit Windows 8.

Any ideas?
