Windows Update September Breaks Bitdefender

Had a major problem today after Septembers Windows Updates went onto my Windows 8 Pro PC.


My Bluetooth devices failed and I lost my Bluetooth keyboard but also a wired one I connected. Clearly an Windows update problem BUT


When I attempted a system Restore it failed saying Bitdefender had some files locked - WHY does bitdefender prevent a system restore from working?


I deinstalled Bitdefender and then restarted the PC after which I was able to perform a system restore and get my PC working again.


But when I tried to reinstall Bitdefender it would not work saying a different version of bitdefender was installed.


So I downloaded and ran the special deinstaller from bitdefender which seemed to remove all trace of the previous installation. I restarted and then ran the installer again. It started downloading the installer from bitdefender website and ran it only for my PC to blue screen. At this point I gave up.


The PC appears to be working fine without bitdefender but obviously I have no antivirus - not good.


I want to know if other people are having similar issues after installing September windows updates

  • nope, just the 3 office 2007 updates repeating problem.


    in future, if you need to run a system restore, run it in windows safe mode. that prevents the locked file problem.


    additionally, the BD uninstaller works better in safe mode too. it cleans deeper as some files are still locked in normal windows mode. after that, use ccleaner or similar to any purge leftover bitdefender registry entries.


    to install BD again (normal windows mode), download the offline installer kit. when it prompts you to download a newer version choose no. the updates can be applied after it is installed and working:
