Adware.agent.nxr
I am using Bitdefender Anti-Virus Plus on a Windows 7 machine. It appears that Bitdefender let through a virus called adware.agent.nxr. After my problems started, I ran a Bitdefender scan and the report stated that this virus was present (in my Windows\temp directory), but that Bitdefender could not remove it. I have since tried using other software to try to get rid of it, but nothing finds it. I have cleaned out the Windows\temp directory, but the problem still exists. Now when I rerun the Bitdefender virus scan, the report says no threats were found. (Maybe bitdefender doesn't report the virus again after found the first time???).
The symptoms are that if I try to open more than 1 or 2 windows/tabs in Firefox, MANY additional windows and pop-ups automatically open, trying to get me to download other software.
Can anyone make any suggestions as to how I might get rid of it? Or am I just going to have to do a clean install of my OS (and of course, I really don't want to have to do that...). Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

In these cases, simply deleting the file won't work. See, it's probably protecting itself from being completely cleaned using the Windows operating system itself. The best way to deal with these types of threats is with what's called an "Offline Scan".
See, what an Offline Scan does is scan your operating system before it actually boot_s. This allows the scanner to remove stubborn malware that would otherwise not be able to have been removed had the actual operating system been running. Here's two good offline scanners:
Yes, I fully realize I just recommended a Microsoft product (and Windows Defender of all things). But lets face it. Microsoft actually has one of the largest and most diverse threat databases of all the companies out there. Not to mention WDO is extremely easy to set up. You just download your correct version (either 32 bit or 64 bit), run it, follow the set up wizard, then reboot your PC while constantly tapping your BIOS access key (either F8, F11, or F12 depending on your PC). Then select the "Boot from USB/Removable Drive" option. IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you are going to install this on a USB flash drive, make sure it is either blank, or the data on it is unimportant! Windows Defender Offline completely reformats the entire UBS stick before installing Windows Defender offline.
Also, note that the Update option might not work. It works for some PCs, and doesn't work for others. It all depends on what BIOS your manufacturer uses. For example, the update option does not work on my computer. But this isn't something to worry about, as the latest signatures are retrieved as you install Windows Defender Offline to your USB drive.
Bitdefender actually has its own offline scanner. It's more complicated to set up and use than Windows Defender Offline, but this will give you the scanning engine of Bitdefender as well as their signatures. Also, same as Windows Defender Offline, this will completely reformat your USB stick. So make sure it's either blank, or has unimportant data on it.
Well, hope I helped. Let me know if anything worked.0 -

Malwarebytes should detect and remove it. Also there is a program called adwcleaner from a French company called Xplode. Its pretty good at finding all kinds of things hiding in your browsers and elsewhere. Worth a try.0 -

" /> Malwarebytes is a joke. You'd be better off using Windows Defender.0
