virus database updates are really effective ???

Hello,
My daddy bought this item and he is not able to know if virus database is updated.
Click on "Mettre à jour" = update does nothing, button exist but no action did, no indication when he clicks on it :-(
No indication of the last update date,
No indication of the database date,
Can not manually update and have the option to switch off/switch on to have a little information about a kind of update progession
