bytefence intrusion

I have just had the bytefence malware overtake my computer, seemingly stopping BitDefender from working. Any suggestions on the best way to eradicate this beast? I've managed to circumvent it in Opera by using the VPN setting, but that's a bit of a pain because it slows things down.
Also, it doesn't show up in Applications, just when I want to search for something in my browser. Well, the message i got was that it doesn't support Opera and that I should download Chrome instead. Then it won't let me do anything in Opera . . . that is until I sidestepped it with the VPN option as mentioned above.
