Bitdefender blocking microphone
When my child is trying to use the microphone during online class (because, you know, pandemic), nothing comes across. Windows 10 troubleshooter can't find anything wrong. Device is not muted. Bitdefender Total Security, no idea which version because they don't make it easy to find out with a simple "About" button, and Bitdefender Central doesn't say either.
If I log the child off and log my account on (Admin role), same problem. If I uninstall Bitdefender and reboot, voila, problem solved.
This is unacceptable performance when devices working properly has become a critical requirement for attending school and doing one's job.

Hi Member,

As per your requirement, you can switch it on or off.

I'm confused about BD's microphone monitor function. I know I can add/remove apps, but it isn't clear what this actually does. It looks like all this does is alert the user if/when a particular app uses the microphone. I suppose than might be helpful, but does BD have the ability to allow/deny use of the microphone? That would be very handy! Sorry if this is off topic - I didn't think it was.

Would love an answer to this and maybe some rewriting of that portion of the program that better describes what it is doing and how to actually block an app

I sent an email to BitDefender support - see below. I will report back if/when they respond.
Email Sent To BitDefender Support …
BitDefender notifies me if an app tries to use the microphone on my computer, but does it have the ability to actually block the app from doing so? I wonder the same thing about using the webcam. If BitDefender had a function to selectively block apps from using the microphone or webcam, that would be extremely helpful. Does it? If not, is is this capability in the works for a future release? If not, please consider this as my vote for adding such a feature. Thank you.
BTW - BitDefender's online form for submitting emails is EXTREMELY ANNOYING. I had to solve at least half a dozen captcha images. Even if I solved them correctly, it kept presenting new ones.

Hello @Thepipe,
Although this is an older thread, I'll share a bit of context on how microphone and webcam protection actually works. Microphone monitor allows Bitdefender to detect different applications or web pages that want to grab microphone access and record sound for a different purpose, such as blackmail or extortion. Rogue apps may access your built-in microphone silently or in the background without your consent. To make you aware of potential malicious exploits, Bitdefender Microphone monitor will give you notice of such events. This way, no app will be able to gain access to your microphone without you being in charge.
As for webcam protection, this feature permanently monitors apps that try to access your camera and blocks unknown applications. Safe and trusted applications are automatically allowed access to the device webcam. An application is considered safe by Bitdefender and allowed by default to access your camera if it has a certain market spread and the majority of users have chosen to allow it.
The behavior is the same regardless of whether or not your computer has an integrated camera. By default, the “Set application permissions based on community choice” option is enabled, which means that when an application tries to access your camera Bitdefender searches the Cloud for a similar application based on a hash, and if found then the Allow/Block rule selected by most users is applied.
As a safety measure, you will receive a notification each time an untrusted app attempts to gain access to your camera, and you will be able to block it or allow it.
Here you can find out more about both features:
I hope the information is useful.
Like I've said above, this thread was opened a while ago, so I'll be closing it now, but feel free to open a new thread, should you have further questions. As for captcha and the Support Center, if you still require their assistance, you can always use the chat option, as this would be the fastest way to get in touch with the Bitdefender Support teams.
Thanks,
