  • Hello,

This is just a quick update to let you know that the culprit was found.

We are currently testing a possible workaround which should keep VSSERV's memory footprint at the usual ~ 200 MB until the fix is released via automatic update.

I will keep you updated with any progress we make. Thank you once again for your patience.

    please do it fast. please

  • I installed the Bitdefender IS 2015, its my first experience with any Bitdefender product.

I didn't read its requirements, but installed on old machine:

    RAM: 3Gb

    CPU: 1.87 GHz Intel Core2Duo e6300

    Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit.

currently this AV is working fine for me, but I am curious to hear what is will slow down the PC in few days or month?

I am asking this on the AV's official forum, definitely here every user will say "It is best product", I like to hear the truth...!

Bitdefender actually is a fairly good product (all those good comparison ratings don't just fell out the sky ;)). However, some people are experiencing a memory leak at the moment which causes instability on some systems because the RAM memory used up keeps increasing until a reboot. However, it might be possible the problem isn't affecting you. As Georgia told the developers now know the cause of the problem and are testing the fix now, so I don't think you should be too worried about it since I expect it will updated now within a couple of days.

    HI Usman313,

    Welcome on the forum!

First thing first, the vsserv.exe is the backbone protection of the machine, it grabs a big mouthful of memory indeed.

However I do not have this memory problem on my two computers with BD IS 2014. Because it is 2014? I do not think so, when I hop to my family's Win8 + BD is 2015 machine, I do not see all the real problems that are discussed on the forum.

    There's something else, but what?

    Truly I do not know.

In several weeks I will jump to the IS 2016 version and I'll see what happens...

My old XP version with 2 GB ram is still stable... I can use CS3 Photoshop, Skype, and Cyberlink video (no more OK! <img class=" /> ) and Bitdefender still takes a good part of the memory - it's right - 350 Mo in the task manager.

Two years ago, my machine was able to go round the clock for ten days, uploading Gbs... of data.

It's true it could not go further... well I considered too it was time to let the material cool down and I won't whine like somebody else on the forum.

The truth is somewhere between the components of your sytem, the integration of your softwares, the way you use it too (it's useless to defrag too often, it's stupid to get rid of "old prefetch" in the CCleaner operations... CCleaner could have avoided to input this gimmick - dangerous to use the registry base -and so on.) and the bitdefender software that could have bugs, indeed, yes.

Don't hesitate to deinstall all softwares you need no more (If you keep key licences you'll be able to reinstall them) and clean your sytem...

I wait the 2016 version with no haste, at least for my Windows 7...

    Regards,

    L.

I just downloaded a trial of Bitdefender Total Security. I looked and it was taking about 200mb of memory (already fairly high) and now it's taking 400mb of memory only an hour later and still climbing!

    I'm on Windows 8.1.

I won't be continuing the trial if this is how it works.

    Hi memout2,

    Welcome on the forum!

Considering BD is one of the best antimalware, if you consider it is valuable, I write "if", you could wait a bit the next version 2016 that will be public in a few weeks!

With my 2014 version on an old XP SP3 formatted 8 years ago, the vesserv.exe is pretty stable at 300 Mb. Maybe too much? I wait for the next vintage anyway.

Well now that I have replaced BDW8 Security with BDTS 2015 (still waiting on my license which was promised by Bitdefender support no later than yesterday, but that is another story) I can share my one day old experience in using BDTS 2015 on W8.1

    1. Memory seems stable at under 300MB if you don't use a browser.

    2. Using a browser or at least Firefox seems to increase the memory used by vsserv.exe

    3. The more new webpages one opens the more the memory seems to escalate. Reopening a webpage previously open during a browser sessions appears to have minimial impact on memory leakage.

    4. What I am trying is the following

    5. Go into Tools ---> Profiles.

6 I selected Work Profile though since I don't do any gaming or watch movies on my W8.1 computers

    7. Select Configure

    8. Make sure the top three boxes are checked but not the bottom one

    9. Click on Applications list

    10. Add Firefox and Plugin Container

    11. Save

While there is still memory leakage it seems a bit slower. Adding other apps that may be active during a during a webpage loading may help a bit. Vsserv.exe memory sitll goes up but occasionally clickong my Memory Optimizer softwre seems to help to temporarily reduce total memory usage.

Bear in mind I am still experimenting with this. I have not yet excluded any apps from real time scanning in BDTS 2015. I will know more on how successful this approach has been in about 12 - 15 hours after a full day of using Firefox. Though admittedly I open a lot fewer webpages on Sundays than I do Monday through Friday.

I don;t expect this will help a lot but if it can keep me from having to do multiple restarts during the day.... We shall see. Cheers

    Hiya Nesivos,

Nice information there which I will give a try on my laptop still using TS 2015 - I have the 2016 beta on this computer and have noticed a gradual increase in the vsserve.exe memory during the course of a day, although it doesn't go over 300mb (yet) so I will look at that as well.

    Hi Nesivos and Rohugh,

    Thanks Nesivos,

Today, I asked some friends to let their W8.1 & BD IS 2015 running six hours before I attended their lunch.

The vsserve.exe oscillates between 250 & 300 Mb six hours later.

They use gmail & skype together but very few webpages opened together (like me). Their memory is not huge by the way (8Gb if I remember, the computer two years old.)

The more new webpages one opens the more the memory seems to escalate

Right. It is probably why my memory leak is very far from the 1 Gb some users display?. I seldom open more than two webpages.

Thanks Nesivos for having pointed out the leakage. I'll try it in a few days at my friend's.

    Regards,

    L.

Wow this is really disappointing. The most disappointing thing? I've been checking this thread for about 10 straight days now, and I've yet to see someone with Bitdefender provide a solution.

This support (or lack thereof) is really awful, I guess I'll just have to go back to Norton :(

Unfortunately it did not do much good. Oh well, got to try. In the meantime I signed up this AM for the 2016 Beta program.

I will say this. Even with the high memory usage in BDTS 2015 it is a lot lighter and scans a lot faster than BDW8 Security. A System Scan on this computer took only 20 minutes yesterday. At least 2X faster than a System Scan took with BDW8 Security. Also web pages load faster with BDTS 2015. For now I can live with having to reboot every 6-8 hours. Hopefully I will be getting BDTS 2016 Beta to download, install and test. Figure it has to solve the memory problem, maybe even before it is solved in BDTS 2015.

    Hi,

I started today with the beta showing just below 200mb, after 5 hours it has gone up to 285. So far I have yet to have it over 300mb even after all day running.

Why deceive users? We do not see the European quality, and the price for the product too high.

  • I am not impressed at all to find that my Bitdefender is stacking nearly 3gb of RAM. This needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

    Specs:

    I7 4770k @ 4.3Ghz

    Asus Z97-P

    16Gb 1600Mhz RAM

I've tried to reach you guys [bitdefender] via Twitter where I was told to email. I email, and I see Georgia Tech reply here.

It is now monday. How much longer do we have to wait for a ###### quick fix for this issue?

    And Lionet,

Please please.. don't try to sugar coat the situation. I know you like Bitdefender as a company and I got no beef with you. You remind me of my former self with the EPIC Game forums when their fanbase went ape ###### when Gears Of War 2 was a mess.

But don't act like I didn't mention that the issue happens with high internet usage.

..And I always can tell when it gets bad because surfing the internet gets extremely laggy. Takes forever to load the pages. I had to switch from Chrome to Firefox because Chrome just blanks out too much with this issue at the moment.

And I really really like Bitdefender but.. 30 min restarts per 1 hr internet usage.. is definitely not workin with me.

This is madness if you expect us to kindly wait patiently for this fix when it's forcing us to reboot every 3-5hours of so depending how heavy the internet usage is, and given we live in an era of high internet usage ...

And then you go on to say:

Right. It is probably why my memory leak is very far from the 1 Gb some users display?. I seldom open more than two webpages.

Thanks Nesivos for having pointed out the leakage. I'll try it in a few days at my friend's.

We get it. Your version of 2k14 Bitdefender isn't displaying this issue for you. Hurray for you. I wish our version didn't.. but it does.

You don't have to go ask your friends to test it out for you. There's a leak. Georgia tech has admitted, I am sure anyone that has a copy of Win 7 and gets this trial will be affected by it.

We just want a FIX. This is going to reach a month and still no fix! For all the propaganda and advertising and "word on the street" regarding Bitdefender.. well right now at this instance.. I am losing hope and faith on the product.

40 hours on a work week? God knows these employee salaries and they can't figure out how to provide a quick patch to this? I am sorry. I have a right to be mad. I bet on Bitdefender and now.. it's not looking so good for me.

    Hi All,

I'm a Bitdefender Total Security 2015 user. My system is a Dell XPS 15 With following Spec:

    CPU: Intel i7 4712HQ@2.3GHz

    RAM: 16GB, 2x 8GB Samsung DDR3

    HDD: Samsung SSD 850 Pro 512GB + Samsung mSata 850 Evo 500GB

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro With Media Center

Depending on my usage, some time after I play game, my ram of vsserv.exe stacked up to 5GB+, every time I reboot / shut down the next boot up show the service vsserv.exe is adding up from previous boot.

Even I have enough ram, but I found it annoying and I don't think it should be this way.

While waiting and waiting and waiting any update / solution from Bit defender I found a way to "flush" the stacked memory used by vsserv.exe.

What I had done is give my windows 8.1 a FULL shutdown. Walah~, the stacking up memory when from 5GB+ to 180MB on new boot up.

    1. Open command promt with Administration right

    2. Give FULL shutdown command "shutdown /s /f /t 0" (Without quote)

    3. Boot on again, (First time may take a bit longer)

I hope this also apply / temporary solve stacking memory used by vsserv.exe

I do have enough memory therefore I only flush with this way after it reach > 2GB usage by vsserv.exe.

    Have a Good day.

I am also having this problem. The worst so far I got was about 2.5GB+ before I restarted my system or call it a day from using my computer.. but I also notice that ever since this issue arises, I am unable to update my Windows and thought this might be the source of my problem. The error message led me to insufficient memory issue (even though vsserv.exe has yet consumed all of my memory yet). I hope the fix will be up soon.

    Hello again,

Further internal testing must be done to ensure the fix is stable before releasing it via automatic update. This is why we decided to postpone until next week this product update.

In the meantime, you can apply the workaround below to keep the vsserv.exe memory footprint at the usual ~ 200 MB:

    - Restart Windows in Safe Mode

    - In Safe Mode open the folder: C:\Program Files\Bitdefender\Bitdefender 2015

    - Locate the file update_components.xml

    - Right click on it and select 'Edit' or select 'Open with' and then 'Wordpad' from the list

    - Once the file is open, look for the <Product enabled="1" string

    - Replace 1 with 0 and save the modification. It will be <Product enabled="0"

    - Locate the file bdpredir.dll in the same folder and either delete it or rename it into something like bdpredir.dllold

    - Restart the computer normally

We will add a new post as soon as the fix is released, so you can undo the above changes.

Thank you once again for your patience. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Wow! It came down from almost 650Mb to a meager 130Mb with this fix, just one question: Is it necessary to repeat the above process to undo the changes, or is it enough to just receive the fix via auto update and let it install automatically on top of the above changes already done??? Thanks

Yes, that the product has updated its program files, you need to return the settings to default.

A lot of BD related stuff going on next week.

    1. Fix for memory problem to be released through a download update, hopefully

    2. BD 2016 Public Beta due for availability next Tuesday. Will it have a memory problem?

    3. Windows 10 roll out begins next Wed.

    3a. Will BD be ready?

3b. Will BD 2015 progams be updated to be Windows 10 compatible or will be have to wait for BD 2016 products to be released, schulued for Aug 29th to see Windows 10 compatibility?

3c. Will the Windows 10 compatibility for BD 2015 products be available without having to upgrade to Windows 10 or will it only be available when upgrading to Windows 10? I only ask this becasue I would rather not have the BD 2015 upgrade to Windows 10 compatibility take place during the upgrade to Windows 10. Too many things can go wrong if both are done at the same time.

Again, right now I am planning to wait for the release of BDTS 2016 before upgrading my W8.1 computers to W10 and installing BDTS on my current W10 computer since BD 2016 will be Windows 10 compatible upon BD 2016 products release. The only reason I would not wait is if BD makes BD 2015 products Windows 10 compatible next month without having to upgrade to Windows 10.

I am just not comfortible having BDTS upgrade to Windows 10 compatiblility during the upgrade from W8.1 to W10 regardless of how safe BD claims it will be. The more pieces in play during the upgrade to W10 the greater the chance of there being a problem with the upgrade.

    Hello,

The Bitdefender developers fixed the memory leak reported in this topic a few hours ago, via product update.

Please undo the changes from the above workaround, then update Bitdefender. A Windows restart is required at the end. The Bitdefender build number will not increase. It's still 18.23.0.1604

To make sure the fix was downloaded look at the File Version of bdtl.dll from C:\Program Files\Bitdefender\Bitdefender 2015. The latest version that contains the fix is 18.23.0.1614

We want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your feedback and help with this issue.

  • To make sure the fix was downloaded look at the File Version of bdlt.dll from C:\Program Files\Bitdefender\Bitdefender 2015. The latest version that contains the fix is 18.23.0.1614

    Hi Georgia,

There is NO "bdlt.dll" so maybe you meant "bdtl.dll" and yes, the ver. for the bdtl.dll is 18.23.0.1614

    Thanks

My apologies for the typo, it's bdtl.dll. I will be editing my original post as well.

  • I forced a manual update and did receive the new file (as bdtl_upd.dll). It didn't overwrite the old file until I rebooted, at which point the RAM usage was no longer 4 GB. It started around 212 MB and has climbed up to 484.6 MB at time of writing.

How did you do the manual update? I tried pressing the "update" button, and then restarting, but the bdtl.dll file is still from the 27-07-15

Mine was created on the 27th but right clicking>properties>details gives the version as 18.23.0.1614. Have you checked your version number for that file?

Strangely, the fix has not been downloaded for me and i am right now having a 3.3 GB RAM usage by Vsserv.exe . Clicking update doesn't seem to do anything...

Any idea what the problem could be?

Short version: I clicked update and rebooted.

    Long version:

    1. I pressed the update button, watched it go through the "Checking" then "Downloading" phase.
    2. I looked at Task Manager saw no change
    3. I navigated to C:\Program Files\Bitdefender\Bitdefender 2015
    4. I noticed bdtl.dll did not have an updated date of today, but checked its properties and found the older file version still there
    5. I then noticed a file bdtl_upd.dll (or similar name) that had today's date on it. I surmised that it was the update, but that it hadn't processed it for some reason
    6. I rebooted
    7. I navigated to C:\Program Files\Bitdefender\Bitdefender 2015
    8. I verified that bdtl.dll had been updated and had the correct version of 18.23.0.1614

At this point it is using much less RAM. I'm sitting at 299 MB usage right now.

Well I updated my BDAV2015 and the damnable thing is still using between 500-600 MB of memory by far the most memory hungry program on the system. What gives...

  • How do I find the version number of the dll ?

It could be that Adblock Plus increases memory usasage by vsserv.exe. I am not postive about this but this is what has happened.

    1. I upgraded to #Windows10 with a clean insstall

    2. I installed BDTS 19.2.0.142

3 I periodically checked the memory usage of vsserv.exe and noticed that after browsing for a while with Firefox that the vsserv.exe memory had climbed from around 290MB to the upper 300MB range.

    4. When doing my weekly backupss of Firefox I had noticed that even though I no longer use Adblock Plus, the backup of Firefox was backing up Adblock Plus scripts/data.

    5. This AM I did a serach for Adblock Plus on my computer. I found a number of line items including some taking up close to 350MB of memory. A lot for sure.

    5. I deleted all the Adblock Plus entries including those still in my Firefox profile which were the ones taking up about 350MB of memory.

    6. I rebooted the computer and checked BDTS vsserv.exe memory. it was about 290MB

    7. i went about my usual moring browsing which involves opening a lot of webpages

    8. The current memory usage by vsserv.exe on this computer is 307MB after about four hours of normal browsing

We know that BDTS does not immediately release memory after a System Scan. I had also noticed that when reopening webpges that the memory in vsserve.exe did not rise by very much, since the fix. My thinking is that vsserv.exe is scanning the webpage including Adblock Plus scripts from their lists thus consuming vsserv.exs memory. No need to use more memory for this when the webpage is reopened

However, the Firefox extension Bluhell Firewall which also blocks ads does so not by using scripts but rather through some programming design. So my thinking is maybe having the Adblock Plus extension in Firefox will cause the memory usage by vsserv.exe to rise as it scans the Adblock Plus scripts used to block the ads on webpages even though one has removed Abclock Plus from Firefox. However, with Bluhell Firewall there are no scripts for vsserv.exe to scan hence the lower memory usaage with Bluhell Firewall rather than Adblock Plus. If the Adblock scripts are still in your Firefox profile they evidently are still scanned even though Adblock Plus has been removed.

Now the above is just a guess on my part and I have no way of actually testing my hypothesis but at least for now without Adblock Plus scripts in my Firefox profile memory usage of vsserve.exe is less. One would think that when Adblock Plus is removed from Firefox that the Adblock Plus scripts are removed from ones's Firefox profile. This however, is definitley not the case.

Correction. The Adblock Plus file was 357K or thereabouts. Sorry about that.

  • Is this how it was going to be after the so waited fix? Version of the .dll file is 18.23.0.1614 so I can confirm I have updated the software, but after my system is on for a couple of hours, vsserv.exe goes up to 450/500MB which is ridiculous.

I want my money back, this is far away from being the best antivirus software, not to mention the number of bugs. Quite disappointed right now!

  • So, did the patch work for anyone?

I went back to using TS 2014 when i noticed the memory leak. I'm not going to re-install TS 2015 until i know for sure that this problem has been fixed.

After 11 days of my pc being awake vsserv.exe is using 400MB, this is on TS 2014... BitDefender is a memory hog!

  • What about the Windows 10 Version 19.1.0.115? Is it also affected? Fix?

My Vsserv.exe runs around 240MB with Windows 10. I haven't noticed it creeping up excessively but the longest I have run that computer is around 3 hours at any one time.

    Before patch

    Uptime: 6:20:44:32

    Size of vsserv.exe: 4,178,416K

    =-=

    After patch

    Uptime: 5:00:41:09

    Size of vsserv.exe: 357,440K

    =-=

Running W7 64bit. It's great not having to reboot before playing any games.

So it looks like this fixed the memory leak nicely.

Shall probably do with IS2015 the same I did with IS2012 - use it until they stop supporting it, as it works! :P
