Updated driver for Dell XPS installation stopped by Bitdefender

Dell issued a new update - Dell-Universal-Dock-UD22-Firmware-Update-Utility_9JJYT_WIN_1.0.13.19_A03 for its XPS laptops.

The installation extracts a file called PowerSetting.exe, and Bitdefender says it "has been detected as infected with Gen:Suspicious.Cloud.2.iu0@a0BHL4ej and Bitdefender could not clean this item. A device restart is required to finalize the cleaning process."

It seems like a perfectly legit piece of s/w from Dell

This is basically suspicious cloud based detection which are not created by malware researchers. You can say it is moreover a file reputation based detection.

If you think the website/ file is incorrectly blocked by bitdefender you can share the same with malware researchers by filling up the forum in below stated link

If website/ file is indeed incorrectly blocked, detection will be removed in maximum of 72 hours and if the detection still remains after 72 hours, consider the website/ file as malicious by malware researchers and the detection will stay.

Why is Bitdefender blocking Dell updates? Surely these should be allowed with no issues. I want this hassle dealt with. This current one is a driver update.

There isn't one specific executable for the Hyper-V VM network adapter. It's a combination of configuration data in the VHDX file, drivers loaded in the VM based on the OS, and communication with the Hyper-V virtual switch.
