Thanks for the information. I renamed the file to httpproxy1.dll and after reboot turned on the Automatic Updates. Things seem to be working fine now.

I did the same yesterday, but really don't know if it made a difference. Today I checked and found that httproxy.dll is back, so I compared the new one with the one I renamed using WinDiff, and it says they are the same! So what was the point of doing a rename? TIA

Mystery solved! I found a post on another forum saying that httproxy.dll is restored every time BD updates its virus definitions, so that means you have to keep renaming it (and use Manual Update). This solution is obviously ridiculous - there must be some way to fix it permanently... Help, someone!

  • I have just looked at my Vista laptop and it is only showing about 12K memory useage for vvserve.exe and is running fine. What I have noticed is that when I power down (not standby) my desktop XP machine the memory useage level is 'reset' and starts low and climbs up and has settled at about 100K lower then previous max memory.

So - as I tend to put my desktop into standby for most of the time and the laptop is always powered off, could this be why the vvserve.exe problem is growing?

It would be interesting to see what BD think of this thread, it is clearly a problem with many people and could result in more people leaving BD for another product.

So please BD, if anyone is reading this, shed some light on this issue.

I just realized that vsserv hasn't been doing its CPU hogging today - I have been working for 2 hours and no irritation :-) Has something changed? Maybe too soon to start celebrating...?!

Oh well, I spoke too soon. It's doing it again! Most annoying!

  • I may have to go to the manual update technique - but I worry that I will miss a vital update... Alex, are you monitoring this thread? Is anything being done about it? TIA

  • I use bitdefender on my XP and it has worked great for the first month, but now I have a problem with the vsserv.exe process- it's using over than 50% from my cpu.

What can I do? It doesnwt stop, and my computer works slowly.

    Please help me!

    I have similar problem.

Would you also send the instruction to resolve this problem?

I am running Windows XP SP3, and Bitdefender Total Security 2009

    Thanks,

We need to have a look on some reports generated on your systems so that we can determine what is casing this sittuation. That is why we would like you to follow the steps described in the next article and after you obtain the following reports : "sysdump.tar", "bdfileinfo.log" and "bdregnode.reg" upload them on http://www.sendspace.com/ then send me a PM with the download links .

Hi Alex, thanks for offering to dig into this. I am currently waiting for vsserv to do its thing! How do we send you a message when we have collected the info?

PS In the video, it looks like the instructions for Error screen and BDFileInfo.log are switched!

I have been fighting the same problem for quite some time. Finally, after lots of frustrations caused by the massive computer (XP) slow down ( overloaded I/O by the vvserv), after downloading and running test files and sending files back to BD, after receiving BD's recommendations which other SW to remove from my computer (which actually eased the problem a little, but for a short while e only),

    I found the real solution:

    • Uninstalled the BD software from the computer completely (using the BD uninstaller)
    • Cleaned the registry

And the old computer performance is back!

I installed another AV Software and everything is fine.

Based on what you said, I have just done a registry clean-up - without uninstalling BD. So far, it seems promising - I will keep an eye on my vsserv problem. It sort of makes sense, as presumably BD follows links in the registry... Comments, Alex?

  • I am having issues with vsserv.exe running and taking up most of my CPU. I have been laboring with my computer being really slow for the past month. Please assist in me in how to fix this. Thank you.

  • Hello Paul Morrison,

We have analyzed the reports you sent us. Please be so kind as to follow the steps from the email received from us - Ticket ID: 201001131002342 and let us know if the issue persists.

We are looking forward to your reply.

  • Hi,

I'm experiencing a similar issue. One thing I've noticed is that vsserve.exe memory usage oscillates between ~3,000K and ~11,000K and page faults continue to go up. I/O Read Bytes also continues to go up. vsserv.exe is at 267,507,092 Page Faults.

    Any way to fix this?

    Thanks!

    John

  • I am experiencing the very same problem. Can BitDefender Tech Support send me whatever the solution process is. I have been getting frustrated with BitDefender using a huge amount of system resources so that my Fast Internet connection is more like the ild 19,200 dial-up connections.

    Hello all,

In order to solve this issue please be so kind as to make sure you uninstalled any other security solution you might have on the same computer (any spyware removal, Ad Aware, spybot or another antivirus).

Having more then one security products installed on the same PC can degrade performance and cause system instability. Even if they are turned off, there are some active processes running in the background. We recommend you to uninstall all the other security solutions in order for BitDefender to work properly. We also recommend you to run a registry cleaner on your computer in order to improve the system performance.

If the issue still persists please be so kind as to follow the steps from this link in order to provide us with the reports we need for further investigation.

Please upload the reports (sysdump.tar, bdfileinfo.log and bdregnode.reg) on http://www.sendspace.com/ and send me a PM with the download links or click here in order to submit the reports directly to our Technical Support Team.

    Thank you.

    Hi Carmen,

Thanks for all your help, both to me personally and to the group - however, vsserv is still going into its high-CPU activity from time to time, but maybe for a shorter period each time. It would be great if other users could let us know if the steps you recommend have helped them. And could you possibly point us at a description of what vsserv does, and what factors might affect its performance.

    Thanks in advance. Paul M.

    Hi,

Just to clarify, it does not appear that the CPU usage is the main issue. It is rather the outrageous I/O activity (reading) caused by vvserv. You see the hard disk light continuously on. You can check it with the Windows task manager. There you will see that vvserv has by far the highest count, typically 10 tims higher that any other of my applications.

As I mentioned in the previous post I tried all the recommendations (removing other SW....) with very little effect, if at all. De-installing resolved the problem. This seems to be a serious and unresolved problem of BD

  • Hi Carmen,

I've sent a PM to you with the links to the files you are asking for.

I hope this will help me and the others to solve the problem...!

  • Hi there. I'm experiancing the same problem high CPU Usage at vsserv.exe. I have tried the 2009 and 2010 version of Bitdefender Total Security and still the problem persists.(same problem as Scott) Thanks for any advice.

  • I've seen that the vsserv.exe problem is quite common. I have it too on my laptop. Can somebody send me the instructions to try to solve it? Please!!!

  • Also, don't forget about me!

  • Hello all,

    John Eisenbraun and Gilab:

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with the diagnostic reports. We will try to reproduce the situation in our lab and we'll get back to you with a possible solution. As soon as we have a solution we will send you the instructions via email.

I have also sent you a PM with your Ticket ID.

In order to be able to further investigate this issue we will need more information about your operating system and the BitDefender software installed on your computer. We have sent you some instructions via email. Please run the diagnostic tools and send us a reply with the reports attached.

    Thank you.

I do not believe they know how to resolve the issue. The BD support keep asking for details and reports on the operating system. Why, if so many people with different HW and SW have had the same problem for months.....They must have tons of reports by now, but obviously any solution

I installed another AV software and this resolved the problem completely (of course you pay 2x)

I really hate to say this...

but keep your product if you don't know how to solve problems.

i really don't want an anty-virus that works WORSE than a virus.

and yesterday it scanned and it couldn't delete 5 viruses on the pc...

seriously... this program needs some serious brain into the remake!!!

  • Hello Toothpick and AHJ,

We are sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with our product. Unfortunatelly we are unable to provide you with a general solution on this issue. From what we have experienced so far this situation appears when there is a conflict between BitDefender and another program/application/process or any remains from other security solution.

However, if you already tried to uninstall any other security solutions please be so kind as to take a few minutes to follow the steps from this post message and send us the necessary diagnostic reports.

We also recommend you to upgrade free of charge to our latest version and let us know if the same situation persists.

Hi Carmen, I'm sorry I don't understand your last post - I am running IS 2010 and I still have the problem. Just now was the worst yet! Locked out for almost 5 minutes!

Dumb question: why don't you guys just slow down vsserv - all it would take is some 'sleep' statements at strategic places in the code... I know that's a quick-and-dirty but it might help us get our machines back while you work on the underlying cause...

I don't know how much longer we can wait for a solution... :-(

I am in the same position. I sent them the three files over a week ago with no response so far. I even sent them a couple of reminders. I think I am going to have to put on some other software. Don't know if I can get a refund or not.

Hello shyam_kepi and Paul Morrison and Jim32792,

shyam_kepi: In order to assist you with this issue please be so kind as to follow the steps from this post.

Paul Morrison: Yes, there were some posts on this topic which had been moved to the Vsserv.exe Taking Up 100% Of Cpu topic for the 2010 version.

I recommended the upgrade on one of my previous topics because this topic is still for the users with BitDefender v.2009.

Since the upgrade to the latest version is free of charge I think it is more than fair to work on this issue with maximum priority for the 2010 version. As soon as I will have a general solution for this issue I will post it.

Jim32792: We are very sorry for the late response to your email. We kindly recommend you to upgrade to our latest version and let us know if the issue persists.

    Thank you.

  • Add me to the list of people who have just started having issues with vsserv.exe hogging CPU usage. My system has become unusable since it did an update earlier today.

I did notice one thing that might be helpful in diagnosing the problem.

I do not have my system configured to do a scan on login or at other times, though I do (well did until this issue occurred) have the real time protection on.

However, when I opened the BitDefender console / control application, on the general tab, I noticed that the number of files scanned was incrementing steadily, even though I had not requested any scan at that time. When I turned off the real time protection, the number of files scanned stopped incrementing and the system became slightly more usable - still not back to what it was this morning, but better. It appeared that the vsserv.exe application began taking less CPU usage.

Could this be a related issue?

And a question - several times above, you have recommended turning off automatic updates, starting in safe mode, and renaming a file. You directions are not clear - are you recommending turning off the automatic updates of BitDefender or the automatic updates of Windows?

  • Hello Paul Morrison,

Why don't you publish the issues to fix this problem here. To find the solution is like to find a secret information. Please don't make us suffering anymore.

  • Hi!

I believe that I am not the first with this problem. The process is hogging my CPU like all of ###### set lose on my PC! I have renamed the httproxy.dll file and the problem is gone.....!!

    My question is WHAT NOW??

I think i read it stops http filtering or whatever and leaves the computer vulnerable!

    Thanks.

  • I suspect the problem has something to do with antivirus updating proccess, especially when we turn on automatic updates with or without silent mode . Before i change to manual update, i noticed that everytime the program found updates such as signatures ( mine was set 1 hour interval ) , then suddenly the vsserv.exe memory usage is jumping high and Disk I/O turn high too , even if it just a hundred kB . It happened on my 2009 and 2010 version. Did anyone notice this ?

  • Hello aviad ,

Please check your inbox , follow the steps that you will find in our email and reply back with the generated reports attached . Also , are there any actions that you perform at the moment when you have this slowdowns ?

    Thank you .

I was having a problem with an application so I went to task manager to see what was going on. I noticed vsserv.exe getting some action so I Googled vsserv.exe and the first hit was this forum.

I have asked for tech support on this product only 2 or 3 times and it always had to do with license issues due to new installs and upgrades on my machines. Don’t believe that I ever got an email response from anyone. The only way I was able to communicate with anyone was on the chat service.

This site http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ rated their anti virus as number 1 but also ranked their help and support as excellent. After reading all of the posts on this thread I can’t imagine how.

These complaints have been going on since July of 2009 thru today and there has been no resolution that I can tell.

About 30 minutes ago I uninstalled BitDefender 2010 on all 3 of my machines.

  • I'm just one more humble person with the same problem. Even after some time (half hour), vsserv is still using 3-5% CPU time by itself. At least the hard drive seems to settle down.

Just to add to the long list, I have the same problem.

As mentioned by a couple of people, the problem is not so much CPU, but insane I/O. A few things to add to the equation and maybe rule out. I encountered the problem today on a completely fresh build of XP SP3. BD IS 2010 was installed after IE7, Firefox 3.6, Office 2003 and loading all critical MS updates.

**There was no sign of VSSERVER going nuts until I ran Windows Update again (first time after installing BD) and installing the latest Microsoft Updates version. VSSERVER kicked in during the new MS Update's first check for updates.**

I also notice that I/O goes mad whenever BD checks for updates. Why this is is bizzare considering it should just be comparing the system virus definition time stamp with the latest one available on the update server. It does this just to check, not actually download and install.

Why is it that this was first reported over 7 months ago, has been confirmed by a large number of users, yet is still outstanding? I changed over from Norton to BD 2010 after reading good reviews. However, after encountering the browser BD Toolbar issue and now this one, I'm beginning to think I may have made a mistake.

  • Hi,

You can add me to the list of people with the vsserv.exe high CPU usage problem.

    My CPU is a AMD 64 x2 5600+ 2800 GHz, vsserv.exe is using 100% of core 1 & 80% of core 2 making normal pc usage impossible.

The problem starts when I play normal pc games & online java games, normal browsing or other applications do not seem to trigger this problem.

Because I’m a Runescape addict & have no life this is giving me a lot of trouble!

If there is a solution I eagerly await your response.
