Turn Notifications OFF

There needs to be a way to turn notifications OFF. Every time I get an email with some squirrelly item that sets off the "protection" it pops up a window that takes focus off the emails. At a minimum, this should just be a 1 second popup that takes me right back to the program. But I'd prefer to turn this "feature" off all together.
