VPN kills wi-fi on iPhone 11, iOS 17.1.1

I upgraded my iPhone 11 this morning to 17.1.1 and wi-fi service to the phone immediately became severely affected. Google search would work for maybe 30 seconds and then say I had no wifi connection. All my apps and connections to my security system, iRobot, and other devices died. I spent at least two hours searching for and trying solutions. When I deleted the BitDefender VPN my phone came back to life.
