Bamital malware - do I need to worry about it?
Hi all,
I had a letter from Virgin Media saying they detected bamital on one of my devices (they don't say which one, or how they detected it). As far as I can gather, bamital was disabled around a decade ago. I did a full scan with Bitdefender and nothing was found - I'm assuming Bitdefender would detect this malware, even if it is old.
This is not the first time Virgin's done this. A few months ago, they reported a possible infection with avalanche-urlzone, which was shut down years ago. Maybe their detection system is a little over enthusiastic and is reporting false positives.
Any advice will be much appreciated!
Cheers

Hello.
You could scan (and disinfect, if needed) your PC with Bitdefender Rescue Environment:
You could also do the steps below.
First, create a log file on your Windows device using Bitdefender Support Tool, by following these steps:
and
create a log file on your Windows device using BDsysLog, by following these steps:
Next, contact Bitdefender Consumer Support by e-mail:
with short description of the issue.
After that, you will get an automated reply by the Bitdefender Customer Care Team, with your ticket number.
Now, in reply to that automated reply, you can send the log files you already created in the first step.
Since you are all done, just wait for the support engineers to investigate your issue and find a solution to fix the issue.
Regards.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I've attached a screenshot of the email.
I ran Microsoft's Safety Scanner which reported no problems (other than a suboptimal configuration setting for Windows Defender "DefenderTamperingRestore").
The only info I can find about 'bamital' is a decade old or more, so I believe it no longer exists. I was just trying to see if that's the general consensus
Cheers!

@Gjoksi , thanks for the info - I appreciate it
I will give that a try in a day or two - I've now scanned with two products (Bitdefender and Microsoft Safety Scan) and have found no problems, so I think it's a false positive. But it's best to be on the safe side! :)

Well, if Microsoft Safety Scanner also did not reported anything alongside bitdefender you need to contact virgin media support or reply back to email stating that which antimalware you have used and none of them found any bamital malware on your system. Also ask them to share how they came to conclusion that your system was infected with bamital malware.

@Flexx , thank you. Yes, indeed it would be helpful to understand how they came to this conclusion. If I find anything further, I'll let you know!
