Can Bitdefender Internet Security 2016 be temporarily disabled to test if it is interfering with an online game?

Yes, you can disable each module one by one to see if its interfering.
Bitdefender > Modules > Anti-Virus there you will see On-Access Scanning and Active Threat Control.
Bitdefender > Modules > Intrusion Detection
Bitdefender > Modules > Firewall
Also let us know what online game and how does it interfere should Bitdefender be the one causing issues.
